Yes it will work. I know for a fact you will need your f body oil pan. I saw a bone stock 5.3 auto go 14.0 in the 1/4 in a trans am.

well the car we have is a 1997 corvette. Looking for an inexpensive way to get it back on the road for my buddy. We just want it to have similiar to stock power. What would we need to swap over?

I would love the 6.0 for my buddy, but he just doesnt have the cash and the guy that sold it to him from corvette forum sold it to him under the false pretense the motor was good. After we paid and it was shipped we got it with low oil pressure and knocking, so we can get a 5.3 for cheap if we can make it work. What parts aside from oil pan, oil pick up and accessories should we change to maximize the performance of this swap? Being that the motor is rated for 50 or so less HP than what the LS1 had from the factory, should we swap in the LS1 cam, and better heads?

any advice would be deeply appreciated.

The heads are fine but the ls1 cam would help a little bit, maybe 15-20hp.

Either 706 or 862 castings, they flow the same as the ls1 heads just have smaller chambers.

Well I do have ls1 heads and a cam laying around, so maybe I should use those. Are the lifters different from the ls1 lifters?

If you change cams at least use the zo6/ ls6 cam, http://www.summitracing.com/parts/NAL-12565308/
Look for a take out for around 100 bucks!!! the 5.3 heads will give you a higher cr, I doubt you would gain anything with the ls1 heads, might even loose power with the lower cr.

hmmm, okay. All good information. LS6 cam it is. Anything else will be required to change this over to fit into the car? Again, are the lifters the same in the 5.3 motor? What about the pushrods and valve springs?

I don't think the 5.3 manifold will fit under the hood.

I would personally get a 6.0 pull out. They can be had for pretty cheap. No need to downgrade.

He doesnt have any money. We have a 5.3 just hanging out in the garage. He spent 12k on this car, and he got screwed by a forum member. The engine was sold to him with the car under the pretense it was good, and it was in fact not. So I have to help him in some way get it on the road.
