Default heater hoses aren't getting warm on brand new block?

Well the water pump isn't new but everything else is. I'm using a 3rd gen Fbody radiator and heater core, I made my own heater core lines from the water pump to the heater core (didn't use diverter valve like on an LS1). But anyways, it's overheating and the hoses are not warm to touch. They are cold even when the car shows it being like 200*.

I have to figure out why it's overheating now. Apparently there wasn't enough coolant in the system even after I put 2 gallons in it. It still keeps taking more in. The heater core lines weren't warming up even after the first fan kicked on at 195* or whatever it is set at. I'm gonna try putting more coolant in it and see how much more it takes. If it's not because there wasn't enough coolant or because of air pockets, does this mean the water pump is shot? Or maybe the t-stat?

Sounds like you have an air bubble in there. Water pumps always pump water, when they go bad they just leak.

Top off the coolant
Leave the radiator cap off
Squeeze the upper radiator hose rapidly like 20 times to move the coolant through it
Then do the lower hose
This should get coolant into the hoses AND surge coolant through the engine and heads and push the air bubble past the t-stat.

Then....start the engine with the cap still off
Wait there and let it warm up
Keep squeezing both hoses while your waiting AND keep topping it off when needed
The t-stat should open up and the level should drop pretty good
Top it off immediately and you should be good to go

Thats if something isn't obstructing the flow from anything you did with the lines.

Do you have the steam pipe off the front of the heads connected to the cooling system?

Yea it's connected to a nipple on the radiator.

Not the overflow fitting below the cap, right? That would cause you issues.

this method works everytime, squeeze till ur hose gets hard.

no seriously u will feel it get hard
