LS1 to LS6 Intake Conversion guru's inside!

alright, i have a 2k z-28. i want to remove my ls1 intake and replace with a ls6 intake. i deleted my egr crap. Someone please fill me in on what i need to convert. thanx in advance!!

i just tried to install a ls6 intake on my 98 z28 and because the new intake did not have any egr i got a block off plate for the egr stuff...when i got everything installed and put back on with the ls6 the car would start and it would rev to 2800 rpms and then bog down and die... i reasearched around and found out that you have to delete egr from your computer with ls1 edit or get some stuff done with your chip... on the other hand im going to just buy a different intake with egr already on it and take it as a waste of time taking the intake off and putting it back on three different times!!

z28man Jan 3, 2004 12:13 AM

what about coolant lines, pcv, etc... ls1 edit is already done to it!

LS1_Crazy Jan 3, 2004 12:22 AM

i had to get 2 new coolant plugs (they go in the back) and a new coolant pipe for the front... thats all i needed for a install on the intake from gm... for the part numbers on the coolant plugs and pipe go to ls1howto.com...you have to have those new coolant plugs and pipe because they WONT fit under the new intake

obviously you didnt search hard enough because you would of found that deleting the air or egr systems has absolutely NO effect on performance. you'll get a p0405 DTC code but it doesnt do anything. my air and egr have been gone for 3 months and i have yet to delete my codes with edit. and i bet your problem was a vaccume leak not egr related.

ok but what about the pcv system? do i have to do anything to it or am i just changing the coolant plugs and pipes?

Yep sounds like a vacuum leak

just intake and coolant plugs and pipes are needed for the swap. the ls6 valley cover and other pcv mods are optional.

Slap a LS6 intake on that pig, and help unchoke it :D I'd say be prepared for minimal gains till those noose port heads get hoged out ;) My bet is your heads are stalling with that monster cam :drive:

LS1_Crazy Jan 3, 2004 05:16 PM

well i took the the new gm ls6 intake on and off multiple times and took my time making SURE there werent any vacum leaks, and it still had the same problem...then i did the same procedure but with the old ls1 intake on and egr back on and the problem went right away...hasnt died once

LS1 Crazy, I had the same EXACT problem. Check the new LS6 manifold carefully. Mine was actually cracked. Looked like UPS dropped it.

All your other questions have been answered above.

Oh yeah, did you put the gaskets on the new manifold?

A few helpful hints...

-The intake manifold bolts are a very low tq spec, they are easy to snap if you go nuts on them.
-You need to swap the intake but you have to remove the stock coolant x-over x-pipe. You'll put plugs in the back two holes and the front pipe that just loops the front two holes.
-I usually undo the rear bolts and hold them up with tape (tape around the threads) since you can't remove the four rearmost bolts they are under the cowl.
-This is an easy swap just take your time and don't break anything
-To that other guy sounds like you have a vacuum leak, check your ltrims on atap.

i tried to look for cracks and there were not any found...also i did not put on the gasket i didnt know there was one to be put on

onyxxtreme Jan 3, 2004 11:02 PM

there's 8 gaskets, one for each intake port :)

z28man Jan 4, 2004 09:47 PM

thanks guys for the help!!

also be careful of the oil pressure switch on the back of the motor sometimes the vacuum lines get wrapped around it and break it off so just watch that and the install is easy, also ive been without air and egr for a while and no problems at all

Visceral Jan 5, 2004 02:41 PM

good lord people... go to the authoriTAY...

www.ls1howto.com

follow the instructions, and then quit yer bitchin ;)

The swap is very easy.
