installed lt's and ory.. question about ses

yes i know after a header install you are going to throw a code without a tune but i just thought this was weird. i had just the headers only put on this past weekend and not the y-pipe... drove it around a couple of days open header, it ran fine and never once threw a code... i had my ORY put on today and welded up to the rest of the exhaust and it immediately threw an SES light... why would that be?
one other thing.... it's running good no misses or backfires but it sounds really weird.. i head the same exact setup on my last ws6 but they were pacesetters, i now have hookers... but it sounded totally different... theres a really loud "fluttery" sound coming from the heade/y-pipe area... doesnt do it at idle only at medium to heavy throttle... hope its not a leak but everything is tight and welded up really good... like i said its running fine but doesn't feel like i gained any hp over the stock exhaust, maybe even lost some in low rpms....

It takes about 50 miles for my car to throw a code. You probably have a leak or maybe its rasp.

brandon_01_ta Apr 14, 2010 08:14 PM

i seriously doubt it's rasp... the y merge is really good and it just doesn't sound like rasp to me... what's a good way to check for a leak?
if it was a leak at the manifold should i be able to hear it at idle with the hood up? sounds more like of a leak where the collector meets the y-pipe

What Y pipe? Could just be a crappy merge design causing the exhaust to rasp?

SWEET98SS Apr 15, 2010 06:29 AM

I wetn under mine on first start up while the pipes were cold and felt around the connections to see if they leaked. All of mine were leaking, I just tightened them up.

Find out what the SES code its throwing. This will help better than taking a wild guess.

just did a scan, the codes i'm throwing are P0140 and P0160
are these the typical codes to throw after header install with no tune?

robsls1 Apr 15, 2010 07:12 PM

P0104 Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Intermittent

P0160 O2 Sensor Circuit No Activity Detected (Bank 2 Sensor 2)

The P0104 make sure you have it plugged in and seated correctly. If it is inspect the sensor make sure the thin wires in the center are not hosed.

P0160 can be if you dont have rear O2 sensor plugged in or O2 sims in place.

no it's P0140 - bank 1 sensor 2 no activity
i assume these are the right codes to throw after header install

Same thing then.

Do you have rear o2 sensor or O2 sim in place.

brandon_01_ta Apr 15, 2010 07:23 PM

no the rear o2's were removed and no sims.... i'll be getting a tune sometime in the near future if wallet allows it.

would you typically throw a code if there was a leak at the collectors or somewhere in the Y? because everything is welded up really nice and band clamps on the headers.... it's just that it sounds really weird.. COMPLETELY different than my 01' ws6 with lt's and ory

JOSH13 Apr 15, 2010 07:34 PM

I just finished my headers and y pipe up also and for a couple days my light would be on for a while and off for a while . Then off for a few days and now it has been on for a few days .... My back o2s are not connected to the exhaust I'm going to get sims. It's weird that the light goes on and off though .... ??

robsls1 Apr 15, 2010 07:35 PM

What do mean by wierd?

You might throw a code you might not depends how bad the leak was.

Does the car drive ok?

My old 00 TA with SLP headers and Y sounded different from my friends 00 with pacesetters and Y.

yeah it runs fine... it's hard to explain the weird sound i'm talking about i might try to do a video and see if that helps... but it's alot louder than my 01' with the same setup... and the loudness isnt coming from the back of the car near the muffler its coming from underneath the car like the header/y-pipe area... just like a loud raspy sound

my 01' ws6 did that... the light would stay off for so many miles than randomly come on for a little while then go off.. then stay off for a week then come back one day for like an hour... it was weird
but since i did the headers on my 02' the light has come on and stayed on since the first start up after the install
