Default why not just put 1 hi flow cat in the cat-back instead of 2 in the y-pipe?

A while back I bought 2 Thunderbolt high flow cats and a flowmaster merge because my Pacesetter ory is way too raspy. I was going to take it to a custom exhaust shop and have them weld in the cats and new merge onto the y-pipe. I'd like to have cats or a cat for peace of mind when I go in for an inspection, just incase they look under the car. Right after my y-pipe merges I have my cutout (like everyone else I guess). I was thinking of just having them put the Flowmaster merge in the Y and 1 cat welded in right behind my cutout instead of 2 cats in the Y-pipe. Haven't heard of anyone doing this but I thought I would give it a try, so that when my cutout is open I still have the benefit of completely unrestricted exhaust with the best flow possible and when its closed its nice, quiet and legal with no bad smell (already pretty quiet with the Hooker muffler). Also if I dont use 1 of the cats I can sell it and save some money. Couple more questions... will the flowmaster merge alone eliminate the rasp while the cutout is open? Is there some reason cats need to be really close to the headers? Is this whole idea stupid?

sorry for the long post, hope it makes since

Yes, the exhaust needs to be as hot as possible, so they need to be as close to the headers or exhaust manifolds as possible. The stock cats are bolted right onto the exhaust manifolds.

If you have just one way far back it won't be as efficient and will probably get clogged up faster, and will have a decreased life.

If you put it that far back it won't work.. It needs to be close for the heat, as mentioned above. It won't get hot enough back there and all you'll be doing is putting in a restriction that doesn't help you pass inspection, etc, because it isn't hot enough to do its job.

So it sounds like you don't actually know what is required for inspections. The best thing to do is find out.

Here in PA even though we have emissions, on 94 and up all they do is check OBD2, no visual. So you can run without cats no problem as long as the codes are tuned out, although it is still illegal, and a cop could give you a hefty ticket if they pull you over, inspect your car, and find you don't have any cats. You WILL pass inspection though. It has to exit the rear of the vehicle though which mine doesn't, but the guy that did my exhaust said he'll hook me up with someone who will pass me.

And if you DO have a visual, but no sniffer test, then you can run gutted cats, or even better, use these :http://www.frozenboost.com/product_i...0ddfce2a29f560

fake cats are awesome, just make sure you tune out the codes. also just ask around i'm sure you can find a muscle-car-friendly inspection station. they are all over texas, just gotta put your ear to the underground and see what you find.

oh and btw its 96 and up for OBDII last time i checked.

Woops. Looks like I've been spreading false information. Guess it's 96 and up.

Also, I don't think they sniff anything that is OBDII+.

93-95 LT1's ran with one cat. When I had my 95 I never had a problem with the cat.

Although moving the cat even further back, might cause an issue.

Not interested in cats at all but just curious:
All other things equal (in other words, if you were reusing the stock cats) would they be less efficient if installed after long tubes vs. Stock manifolds because they're farther down the path?
