headers choice's and intsall question

im looking for a good set of LT headers and ory that work well and will be ble to be installed with the engine still in the car, and any tips on how i go about installing them at home

MrMixnMatch Jun 26, 2012 06:47 PM

Every install writeup I've seen has the engine still in the car. You just need to get it in the air a little bit with some jacks/jackstands. Most people also replace motor mounts at the same time. Just something to look at.

devic Jun 26, 2012 07:12 PM

good idea ive been looking at those solid motor mounts i forget there name begins wit ha s and there red ?

so id have to get the car up pretty high ? to get some headers in there u think ?

Jdsls1 Jun 26, 2012 08:37 PM

As high in the air as possible. A lift is the best option but most don't have the access. Lots of people do it on jack stands though. The drivers side header is the hardest. I had to get my header completely straight up and down to get it to slide into to place. It was tight. You just have to take your time. As far as header and y pipe goes I vote for the Texas speed stainless headers and y. That's what I have and they went in no problem and look sweet.

^^^ +1 for TSP LTs and ORY. Great value. Awesome look. And to top it off it's stainless.

devic Jun 27, 2012 05:41 AM

what the average price on those ?

Jdsls1 Jun 27, 2012 06:13 AM

GO on the Texas speed website and do some window shopping. It's a great site and they have other headers besides theirs. The 1 3/4 from them are 399$ and the 1 7/8 are 499$. I got the 1 7/8( go big or go home right?)lol

MrMixnMatch Jun 27, 2012 07:52 AM

On the motor mounts:

The manufacturer you were looking for is Spohn. They're extremely popular as far as the solid mounts go.

If you would rather go Polyurethane, Prothane makes really good poly mounts.

devic Jun 27, 2012 05:45 PM

how much benefit to u get from the 1 7/8 over the 3/4 ? is it worth the extra 100 ?

yeah thats it spohn, yeah i think im def going to go solid

QuadratSS Jun 27, 2012 07:13 PM

I am also going with the TSP 1 7/8 LT's with a catted Y. I live in Mass. so stainless is a must. My SS only has 24k on it, new engine mounts really make a diffrence??? Also are tha ARP header studs worth the $100 im seriously considering buying them.

MrMixnMatch Jun 27, 2012 07:52 PM

If you aren't planning huge mods in the future, 1 3/4 is just fine.

Yeah, new motor mounts make a pretty big difference. They'll also prevent the ever-so-popular "my y-pipe is hitting my floor" threads. That's what happens when your mounts are shot, so it's easy to just replace the motor and transmission mounts while you're in there.

As far as the header studs go, they shouldn't be more than like $40 from WS6store.com

Most people have good results from reusing stock gaskets and bolts, but again it's cheap insurance to use new stuff while you're there.

And for gaskets, most people would recommend the GM MLS gaskets, they're like $23.

eventually i want to put a good hp rated cam but at the same time doesnt kill my gas and prob will eventually get the ls6 intake or the fast 72 intake if i can find 1 for a good price

MrMixnMatch Jun 27, 2012 08:33 PM

The 1 3/4 will still be more than enough.

As far as intakes go, ls6<BBK<FAST (92 or 102, depends on application).

I'm going nearly the same route you're going with my car, but I'll probably just upgrade to an LS6 unless I find a BBK or FAST for extremely cheap.

cheap headers go with tsp
big $ stainless go with arh

Cheap, QUALITY headers - TSP

Just plain cheap... - Pacesetter (IMO) or Ebay.

Or if he wants higher quality then arh top off all those and you cant deny it. If you do your in denial

MrMixnMatch Jun 27, 2012 08:59 PM

ARH (American Racing) is definitely a quality piece.

Regardless of that fact I prefer Kooks over ARH.

ARH (again, imo) is like the FAST of the header world. It's cool to have, expensive, and makes your internet penis larger, but isn't necessary for every fourth gen on the road.

devic Jun 28, 2012 12:56 AM

man id love to have a set of kooks but i dont think thatll be in my price range any time soon lol, and i dont like the metal design of the bbk , but like u said i think ima go with ls6 unless i find a cheap 92 or 78 fast intake

but u think it would be more wise to just get the 1 7/8 encase i mean only hundred more right ?

Jdsls1 Jun 28, 2012 02:19 AM

^^^ that's why I went ahead and got the 1 7/8 headers because I wasn't sure which direction I was going with my build. Better to have now and not need, then to have to get a different set later to accommodate your future mods. So for the extra 100$ they get my vote.

Maniac_64 Jun 28, 2012 02:56 AM

Got the TSP 1 7/8's and TSP ORY here. Had to grind a little on round part of the k-member that sticks out but it was't that bad. Took about 45mins to install. Sounds mean...love it
