Default Going crazy trying to figure MAF / Intake / Air cleaner compatabilty

I'm having some compatibility issues, and after searching and searching, i'm wondering if i could get some help regarding getting a setup.

I have a LM7 that is getting a LS6 stock DBC intake.

From what I read the stock opening of the LS6 is around 78mm, and the LS6 MAF (PN# AF10043) is about 85mm. I had a 411 PCM flashed for the 5 pin LS6 MAF, so shouldn't be any worries there.

What size air intake am I looking for? Do i just get a 3"? I'm planning to run a 90 off the TB into the MAF, then either another 90 or air cleaner right there.

Sorry if this is confusing, it's my first foray into the LS world and the LM7 doesn't have any intake parts on it so i'm working from nothing. Pic below is what i'm going after.

Youll want the maf further from the air cleaner than that. At least 4 inches. Otherwise youre fine.

Factory throttle body's require a 4 inch coupler and stock LS MAF's are usually 3.5" couplers so you should be going with a 3.5" tube/filter.

So even though stock LS6 was still 78mm or so, they still went with the bigger 85mm MAF.

So I'd need to get a coupler to go from 4" to 3.5" to accommodate the size difference? I should put that coupler right after the MAF then probably?

space constraints typically dictate what you can do. You have a pic of underhood? Usually most swaps get a 4" 90* elbow so they can run some tube between the TB and the MAF and then tube between the MAF and filter.

Underhood will be pretty close to the above picture, it's in a 280z like that picture.

Will a 4" OD slip over a LS6/LS1 stock throttle body?

hmmm my filter must be blocking the pic as I can't see anything. I think the 4" couplers are ID not OD.

Here's a direct Imgur link: https://i.imgur.com/3xzRlLA.jpg

I ended up ordering that AF10043 MAF and a universal style K&K Filter that has the 3-4" ID that should work for any application. When i get the MAF in hand I'll bust the calipers out and measure the TB and MAF to see exactly what I need.

Have you thought about ditching the MAF and going SD, it would make things easier.

No i havent, as I said this is my first step into FI world and my first LS project.

Is there a tutorial around or where should I look for further information regarding this? One caveat is I've already had my custom wiring harness created for a 5 pin MAF

I wouldn't ditch the maf. It looks like you have the room based on that picture. It may simplify the install but tuning a VEtakes longer than tuning a MAF curve in my experience.

Yeah I'm just trying to get this project up and running, I think a MAF will be fine for my situation. I ordered it yesterday so when it gets here I guess i'll just use calipers and try to figure out if i can do a 4" or 3.5" or something like that.

If your car is like the pic, I would run the intake tube like a "U" from the TB, to the driver's side a ways, then back towards the firewall. This will give you the proper length of run for the MAF. Ideally there should be about 4-6" before AND after the MAF, IIRC. The MAF likes straight airflow.

You should route it in front of the radiator like this. It will draw cooler air and let you put the MAF in a straight length of tube.

30 Ounce- I agree with your routing, but I don't think he will have the room to route it alongside the radiator, going by the pic above which he says is much like his car. The radiator in your pic is narrower, allowing the routing you suggest. IF his radiator is like yours, then no problem.

He has the same hole exposed as I do on my s30. He will need to move his overflow bottle though.

In which case, that would be the way to go.

Well, my 4" elbow came in the mail today, fit around the MAF with way too much room and easily slipped over the LS6 throttle body, though i could probably clamp that side down.

I guess I will return and try for a 3.5"
