Default Oil Pan Prep Prior to Installing

Hey all, noob here. I ended up with the GM Muscle Car oil pan for my swap. Besides opening up the passage in the oil filter area (its so tiny I cant even with GM on that), what other things might I do to the pan prior to putting it on the engine? I plan on running an oil cooler.

SHould I drill and tap 2 ports for future turbo project?

Also, what is this cap covering above the filter area in the photo below?

Don't forget to put a bead of RTV along the corners where the front and rear covers meet the block. The rest is sealed by the oil pan gasket.

That's the bypass cover, it essentially bridges two oil passages that you will see inside if you remove that cover. That's a common location for adding either an oil cooler adapter or sensor adapters, turbo feeds etc. If you wanted to add a turbo feed for example, you can just remove that cover and bolt this part in it's place: http://www.improvedracing.com/oil-ac...nes-p-339.html

It's also highly recommended to install a pickup tube brace on the pickup tube flange to make sure the O-ring seals correctly on the oil pump. Read more about it here: http://www.improvedracing.com/oil-pu...amp-p-642.html

Default Oil Insert By Pass Hole = Flow Increase

Hi Smokey, GOOD report.

Your great work is just too SIMPLE, so important for engine life.

My tech is to add another passageway in the oil insert area, not sure if the GM pan you fitted needs this ?

Thank you! When looking at the pick up tube I couldn't help but wonder WHY the flange didn't cover both holes. Now I know theres a brace, I'll be installing it. Its also helpful because, when using a 2 row timing chain, you have to space out the oil pump. This in turn pulls pick up tube support bracket holes out just enough to where it stresses the tube a bit. I ended up hollowing the holes out a bit but some may just bend the tube. It was easy to see how this affects the o-ring.

I'm planning on running the cooler, so I placed an order for the cooler adapter and pick up tube support from Improved Racing just a bit ago. Thanks again!
