Default 6.0 Lq9, small 224 cathedral cam with square port heads?

Anyone running a 6.0 lq9 with a small cam like around a 224 for cathedral heads but with square ports?
Or will the lq9 for a fact be better with stock 317 heads?
Really wanting some real world experience knowledge if possible.

Your gonna get several different answers, and lots of opinions. It’s a very debatable topic that really has no right or wrong answer. I’ll give you a real world experience example that I’m working on right now. I’m starting a build right now in my shop. Just got everything back from machine shop, and everything is together and ready to start mock-up. It’s a .030” over 6 liter block (LQ4) that will have GMPP LS3 CNC’d heads on it. Going in a 99’ Silverado 4wd ext cab, which is a heavy truck. We are looking for torque, and I had Tony Mamo spec the camshaft. It’s a 219/231 Comp hydraulic roller. Engine will never see 6500 rpm. This is not the first square port build I’ve done for torque, and I can make it work with the right parts.
As Mavn said in the previous post, there are many threads about this subject.

I see posts with cathedral heads and a cathedral 224 specd cam.
Or square port heads and square port specd cam.
I didn’t see a 224 specd cathedral cam with square port heads.
I only found one that talked about a small square port cam with square heads.
I’ll search again, I’d ask on fb but too bs there vs here

The issue with square port heads is they tend to need more duration on the exhaust side, up to 12 degrees extra duration. A custom split cam would be best.

Get a hold of a vendor like Steven from Cam Motion. He is very knowledgeable. I talked with him for a bit about this subject on Friday. He explained a lot about it for sure.
