MAF's and TB...worth it?

Ive seen some of these with some pretty high prices..are they even worth the money? Do they gain the #'s they say they do? Im curious..

If so..what would be a good app for my car..its a bolt on car..stock internals..with a 125-150 wet shot..What would benefit my set up?

Thanks.

Take a look at JRP's write ups. A MAF will be a waste of money in 99.9% of applications, a ported TB will be helpful in most cases.

I second that

^^^^This is the guy everyone seems to be using for the tb,do a search on Bo White tb.I will be giving him my business real soon.Haven't heard anything good about MAF's,money could be spent elsewhere.

Jantzer did my TB, really nice work. I would leave the MAF alone though, the stockers good for like 500 hp or something.

Now is going bigger like 85-90mm Better? Or just getting it ported and polished?

Redneck Z Mar 31, 2005 03:46 PM

If you have access to a dremel, port it yourself. It's easy, I'm doing my second one right now. In fact I'll sell you my old one if you want.

Stock TB can handle a lot of horsepower. No need to go bigger, IMO.

Ron@Vengeance Mar 31, 2005 07:26 PM

Stock is fine, but ported is better :D :D

Its been proven time and time again.

Just descreen the MAF...Do not port...it will handle more HP than you will probably throw at it....and it makes it a bitch to tune if you port it...
Definately Port and Polish and bump stop mod the TB....Cheap, Free, proven Horsepower

WS6FirebirdTA00 Apr 1, 2005 09:43 AM

do the TB dont touch the MAF, only thing i would do to the maf is take it off the car if you do an SD tune like i did. i say leave it stock or tune it so u can take it off, nothing inbetween

cyphur Apr 1, 2005 02:12 PM

tb's are worth it every day of the week. MAFs can be worth it for M6 cars if you can tune for it(and tune well).

No arguments there, my friend! It was just a vote against 90mm. :jest:

I just sent my TB out to Cammmin Beast, he has been awesome to deal with so far!!! :D

Cant wait till it comes back! :D

Mike98WS6 Apr 2, 2005 08:44 PM

Like the others said get the TB. Stick with the stock MAF.

Not a fan of the 90mm tb? Even tho most people that throw the 90mm tb's and the FAST 90mm intake have seen great results? With a decent sized cam and a good exhaust 90MM intake setups seem to be worth a good gain.

HAMRHEAD Apr 3, 2005 01:04 AM

Don't touch your MAF! Tb can be ported. Don't replace it though unless you are going to a 90mm intake.

obZidian Apr 3, 2005 01:17 AM

how about a larger maf (85mm) to match a 90mm intake/manifold setup? I know i wouldnt want gain much from the maf but it should flow much more, contributing to some kind of power gain...

a ported tb is also a great idea. you can just do it yourself but you might mess p and not get the same results as bo white for example. I would just have him or another do the grinding for me when it comes to that....

PewterWSSicc Apr 3, 2005 01:23 AM

I agree with everyone else. I have been told not to mess with the MAF. Several of my friends have changed theres and saw little to no gain. And in some of them it becomes too much air without a tune and i was told that the car retarded the timing some because of it. The throttle body polishing is definately a good idea. I just got mine back about two weeks ago from Cammin BeaSSt. I dynoed 7rwhp more and i can tell a difference. Before i got it my Tach in first couldnt keep up and it would look like i hit rev limiter at 5700. If i let it go up slow it goes to the normal 6200. But now after the throttle body it looks like im hitting limiter on my Tach at 5500. Its a good thing my shiftlight is on its way.
So i would definately recommend the throttle body. Hey Cammin do you do any other polishing work, like heads or anything?

00Z28 Camaro Apr 14, 2005 04:06 PM

you guys are talking about porting the STOCK throttle body right ?
