The temp that the stat opens should be stamped on the thermostat in Celcius. That's the only way to tell for sure. There are a lot of factors that effect engine temp. Fan turn ON temp., traffic, summer driving in HOT and HUMID conditions, A/C turned on full bore. These are just a few.

It should have no effect on emissions.

Yes it will. I have one. Just dont turn the car off and make sure it is completly warmed up.

I just ordered a 160* tstat. I figure a cooler motor = a cooler transmission. Yes I do have a trans cooler, but Id like to help keep everything cooler as much as I can.

is it true that the gauge in my 02ws6 is a dummy gauge. i put in the 160 stat yesterday and the gauge still reads up near 210?

Yup. Think of it as having three positions:
Cold
Operating temp
Oh %&$* you're about to overheat

Only the 98's have accurate temp gauges.

yea there was an air pocket in the system yesterday, temp was fine, then the needle went up as fast as the tach when you spin down the track in 1st gear, check gauges light comes on after the needle was spiked past the red zone. the car was only idleing for a few minutes so it really didnt get that hot but thanks alot GM for the awesome gauge
