Kooks LT'S and catted y

Anyone who has Kooks with catted y......which brand of cats did you receive with your y-pipe and have you had any problems? I have heard bad things from people who got the QTP LT with catted y and they got the magnaflow/carsound cats which is what one of the sponsors offers with their Kooks LT'S.
Thanks
Dave

i have kook LTs with cats.

awesome quality and they sound great. :hail:

How long have you had them and have you had any issues with the cats? Where did you purchase them?
Thanks
Dave

I Just received my Kooks LTs and y-pipe with cats and the cats are no longer carsound/magnaflow cats. Kooks is now making their own cats, which are now metallic instead of ceramic, and are supposed to flow over 100 CFM more than the carsound/magnaflows.

Hey mean02z28,
Did you order yours direct from Kooks? All the other sponsors I look at are selling the carsound/magnaflow y-pipe with the Kooks?
Thanks
Dave

the shop that installed mine deals directly with kooks since theyre not far from them.

i had them installed in june.though i dont drive my car very much so far theyve been great.

I run Kooks LTs w/ their 3" magnaflow catted Y. I'm pulling them off tomorrow to replace it with an ORY because I've got some mean rattling coming from the Y pipe. I had no complaints with the setup before the rattle. I know they don't rob much power either which is another plus.

I'm still not positive that it's my cats that are the problem, it could possibly be a clamp too. I haven't looked at it yet.

Hey Bad Ass,
Let me know what you find out( if anything) concerning that y-pipe. Also, where did you purchase your headers? What did you pay?

My catted y-pipe is beautiful! Makes good power too.

Dave, I ordered my headers from TT Performance, one of the sponsors. I don't think you can order directly from Kooks. My headers were made to order, so chances are if you go that same route, you'll get the new cats as well. It took me a little over a month to get mine, but the wait was worth it - the headers and y-pipe are incredibly high in quality. Just to show you, I enclosed two pics of the different cats. The pic on the left shows the Magnaflow/Carsound cats and the pic on the right is from another thread and shows the new cats from Kooks.

I bought mine about 2 years ago through a TEA group purchase. I paid around $12xx dollars for them when they were pretty new to the market. The catted Y took up a decent chunk of that price at close to $500 bucks if I remember correctly.

Only issue I have with the setup is that my headers are stainless, and still look new. My Y pipe however is pretty good and rusted. So I'm thinking about having my ORY ceramic coated just to keep it looking nice.

Thanks for your info Bad Ass :)
MeanZ28, is the new y-pipe stainless steel? And to both of you guys, did you keep your AIR and if so did you have to do the air check valve mod, and are you running stock sensors or vette sensors up front?

BAD ASS TA WS6 Aug 20, 2005 11:55 AM

I run AIR, no real need for me to delete it since I was running cats. I won't be anymore, but I'm still going to keep the AIR system until I build my new engine.

I never had to do the check valve mod.

Use your stock o2 sensors up front, and you're going to need o2 simulators for the rears.

Oh and I forgot :bang: after buying and having the parts installed, I will probably be broke, so do you think I should wait and install the stuff when I have the money for the tuning or do you really need to have it tuned? As you can see I don't have any other major mods on my engine. I don't plan on doing a cam or anything like that. My car is a daily driver and I just want it to pass inspection, have decent gas mileage :chug: and sound sweet

I've been talking with Kooks for the past month about a stainless y-pipe (catted and non-catted). The latest that they told me that it is scheduled for production and to check back in about 2 weeks. I'm holding off on ordering until they can give me a part # for the stainless y-pipe. Unfortunately, as stated previously, the catted y-pipe takes up a big chunk of the price, and they said that the stainless would be about 20% more $$$ than the current catted y-pipe price. :eek2:

gordonloser Aug 20, 2005 05:04 PM

I hear ya about the price but I think it would be worth the extra cash.

BAD ASS TA WS6 Aug 20, 2005 05:06 PM

Gordon, no need for tuning. I've seen a lot of cars run rich after headers, but mines been running MINT for 2 years. It's going to be tuned after I put the cam in.

On another note...
I just pulled off my catted Y and the passenger side honey comb is completely blown out. It's sitting all the way down by the rear o2 bung. So I am kinda of pissed about that. I have approx. 6/7k miles on them.

I replaced it with an ORY and it is pretty loud, sounds good though. Can't say much about the catted Y, other than the fact that I'm going to call it junk.

Anyone know what the deal is with their new catted y? I hope the quality is better than that of the magnaflow cats...

ULTIMATEORANGESS Aug 20, 2005 05:12 PM

kooks just raised their prices i heard.

like they arent expensive enough.worth it though. :)

KrazyDan Aug 20, 2005 05:52 PM

I got mine through scoggin and dicky(sdpc). they arrived in less then a week. this was about 14 months and maybe 12k miles. no issues with the cats so far. it cost me 12xx and that included gm gaskets and o2 extentions.

sdpc was the cheapest i could find. check the group purchase section as well

gordonloser Aug 20, 2005 09:02 PM

has there been any GP on Kooks recently? Although I would like to wait until they get the SS catted y
