Default What's the trick to using a truck 85mm MAF?

I noticed in the Jan. 06 Hot Rod LS1 build up article that they used a truck MAF. I have an extra one of these in my toolbox. So what's the deal, is it as simple as getting or building and adapter harness? Who sells them or can someone post part#'s to build it? They claimed to have ran it on a stock computer all the way past 500 crank HP so I'm assuming our stockish '99 Firehawk won't object to it. Any comments on that? I searched a bit and noticed that this is also a ZO6 MAF, if that is correct.

Thanks,
Vernon

you can get the pig tail harnes from a GM dealer. There are other's out there that make a 5 pin to 3 pin adaptor. The big trick is tuning for it. Unless you have a way to recalibrate the MAF table, you are better off not messing with it. The PCM section has alot of info on this

Casper's sells good-to-go adaptor harnesses. If
you want to solder then the last 6" off a junkyard
truck would do. Though the Casper's one also lets
you use the in-MAF IAT sensor.

You need to write the truck MAF table to the PCM
and that means find a buddy, buy the tuning sftwr
or hire it done.

In the end you just have a larger bit of pipe and
one that tops out at less air than the stocker.
It will flow better, but a stock motor is not
really challenging the stock piece. Expect no
performance improvement other than what the
seat of your wishful pants might let you imagine.

Just because magazine dudes put stuff on and
it doesn't hurt (just cost free money, parts &
services) doesn't mean it's the smartest thing
to do. Build-up articles where they hang on half
a dozen sponsor-provided pieces and come up
with 15HP seem to be the norm, but they seldom
go so far as to figure out which four of them are
just tagging along and playing dress-up or the
downsides of the two, that are doing the work.

Far better for most people is the stocker,
maybe dig up a junk one and descreen its forward
end and try it out with the ability to step back.

I have the slp 85 mm it came with the harness. I tuned it with my predator. Lessened the timing and increased the fuel I believe i have my timing at -.5 and fuel at +2.5 or so these are not exact #'s I would have to plug the predator back in to see

That's a good one.

Yeah I wasn't expecting much other than maybe fun experimenting. Like I said I have one that I'm not using so I thought what the heck, give it a run. The only reason I hadn't tried it is because I figured it would require tuning but when I saw them running it on a stock program I thought maybe I had missed something. I know not to believe everything in the mags. I'm really knowledgeable on performance and electronic engine controls but I'm not a LS1 specific type of guy. I've got to many different types of engines to be able to keep up with everything about any one in particular but I've been studying the new GM small blocks lately. I'll put it on and moniter the PCM with one of my scan tools and buttometer to see what it does. If anything comes out of it worth noting I'll dig this post back up.

Thanks,
Vernon
