Does this look like it would cause an oil leak? I had an oil leak somewhere around the front of the engine so I pulled everything apart to replace the gasket, this looks to be quite more than a gasket problem. Keep in mind the seal is double lipped, so I'm not sure oil would make it past the seal. Any ideas?

Aftermarket balancer?
Cracks are never good on engine parts.

Not sure if that would cause an oil leak but the more important question I would ask is what caused the crack in the first place? I'd certainly replace the cover and while you're at it might as well replace the chain and maybe even the oil pump depending on how many miles it has. While it's all exposed is the time to do that stuff I would think.

Does the crack go all the way through the cover? If so I think it could certainly cause a leak.

Are you absolutely certain its a crack? Those covers are notorious for having casting flaws that look like cracks.

stock balancer, the idiot before me tried to "punch" the seal out, there a big gouge on the front of it where he hit it. the engine was rebuilt 2000 miles ago, with new oil pump, chain etc. So I'll just bend over and pay the $83 for a new one since a dealer has it about an hour away, although with gas prices like this it might be cheaper to pay for overnight shipping! lol
