Is what I've heard a myth? Ok so I've heard a internally stock car with the 00+ manifolds (yes the 00 manifolds are the same as the 01-02) no cats and a Y pipe can make close to the same power as a car with Headers... Does anybody still believe this to be true? I find it very hard to believe, but I've got no cats, SLP Ypipe, and SLP 2otl and I'm gonna dyno the thing in the spring, so I guess I will find out, but anybody else do this? and if I put in a cam how much hp will I be loosing by not having headers? |
Re: Is what I've heard a myth? I dont think anybody held out longer than me,with stock y pipe and hollowed cats, and stock manifolds. Let me tell you Hooker LT and off road Y made a giant difference! Granted i have home ported heads and custom cam, but i am willing to bet i picked up 30 rwhp and 30 ft. lbs of torque! I plan on redynoing soon and i will post results! FWIW i flow tested ported head with stock 2001 f bod manifolds and Hooker LT header, and they flow about the same, headers gain from longer primarys and collector effect on each exh. port when running. This is not measurable on bench! [ February 01, 2003, 08:34 AM: Message edited by: LS1derfull ] |
Re: Is what I've heard a myth? Stock manifolds are good, headers are better. Latest issue of Hot Rod has best bolt ons for late model muscle and has dyno results for a car that already had the y pipe replaced and cats deleted, went from 319/336 to 335/350. |

So if you can tell me what year the car was that would be great!...thanks |
Re: Is what I've heard a myth? I went from 308/321 first dyno to 331/345 w/ the addition of the hooker headers and no other changes. well worth it and a bit more than a 5hp gain. JR [ February 01, 2003, 11:10 AM: Message edited by: JRcamaroZ28 ] |

I'm not saying headers arnt worth it just trying to gather all the info |
Re: Is what I've heard a myth? well if your gonna do a cam w/ and aggressivness to it your gonna want to get LT's so it can breath better. JR |

My car would just choke off in the upper RPMs if I had a cam, oh well I'm just trying to figure out how I wanna spend my honeymoon money |
Re: Is what I've heard a myth? Zippy, I just had my car dyno'ed again. Before, I had the 345 HP option and otherwise a stock car. It pulled 321/336. Last Fri, after QTP (Grott) ORP Y and a cutout it pulled 344.7/358.2. BTW the cutout gave me only 2Hp and 1Tq. |
Re: Is what I've heard a myth? oh well I'm just trying to figure out how I wanna spend my honeymoon money Ya get money for going on a honeymoon? I'll go on a second one if someone will pay me. BTW, good answer from LS1derfull. The total effect in (street) headers isn't all in exhaust flow as measured on the bench,no? |
Re: Is what I've heard a myth? Headers are worth every bit of it! My torque and drivability are up more than any other mod i have done from day 1! Engine breathes incredible now, you can even hear it exhale when you lift on throttle to shift, sorta like a Harley only way more power full! |
Re: Is what I've heard a myth? Jeff, If I remember correctly, when we met at NED back in Oct., you got that 12.0 with a disconected Y-pipe & cats directly at the manifolds, pulling the Y off to the side, no? Or were you just disconnecting the Y after the cats, leaving them connected? Also, were those cats gutted? Thanks. WJ.--'02 SOM A4 SS, 12.82, 108.3, 1.92 sixty. 1500 miles. |

I ran 12.20's with exh. closed also, my best runs before this were 12.4 and that included dropping y pipe but leaving cats on motor. Later Jeff. |
Re: Is what I've heard a myth? Good headers are worth 20-25 RWHP over '00+ manifolds. |
