ASP install-can't be right?(PICS) So I finally got around to getting an ASP pulley and installing it. Got stocker off fine, trying to put asp on now. However, I can't turn the bolt anymore and it's around 200 ft lbs on the torque wrench. Weird thing is, take a look at it.....it appears to still have a good quarter inch before it's totally snug. <img src="http://brotherson.com/cars/images/TransAm/asp/AUT_5116.jpg" alt=" - " /> <img src="http://brotherson.com/cars/images/TransAm/asp/AUT_5117.jpg" alt=" - " /> Is that right or ok? Should I be trying to get more of it snug? I about herniated myself and it won't turn anymore. |
Re: ASP install-can't be right?(PICS) don't force it on any further-remove it and see what's wrong-it may have gone on crooked. clean up the crank snout and try again. |
Re: ASP install-can't be right?(PICS) Did you grease the crankshaft and the inside of the pulley? And hopefully you used the old bolt to press it back on. You should also put some grease on the underside of the bolt head. It does not look seated all the way. You should torque it to 240 ft lbs, then back it off and install the new bolt. If you can't get leverage to get it pressed on, get someone bigger than you. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" /> |
Re: ASP install-can't be right?(PICS) i can not get he stock one off. the crank keeps spining on me. |
Re: ASP install-can't be right?(PICS) "i can not get he stock one off. the crank keeps spining on me." Have a friend keep the flywheen from moving, problem solved. I can't see too clear from the pick. The quick way to tell is to see if your other pullies line up with the ASP. Did you recently put on a double timing chain? If so, please read my post from last week. Good luck. |

I have both a Rollmaster timing chain and an ASP pulley and this part of the install has me seriously stressed out. I hope I dont run into any of these problems. And to Black Sunshine...I did a search in all of External Engine by your user number "409" for the words "timing chain", "ASP", "pulley" and found nothing. Do you remember the name of the post you are talking about? Nevermind, I found the post, it was in Internal Engine... <small>[ April 25, 2003, 10:26 AM: Message edited by: Constrictor 98TA ]</small> |
Re: ASP install-can't be right?(PICS) TTT Mine kinda looks like this too... I have a rollermaster double chain, and had my pulley machined. PUlley lines up fine, just wanna make sure this wont cause a prob w/the front seal... |
Re: ASP install-can't be right?(PICS) I thought you didn't have to machine the pulley with a dbl roller set on the f-body. I thought that was only on the vette. |

What the heck is the stuff towards the passenger side of the car? It looks grey and rough? |
Re: ASP install-can't be right?(PICS) This may be a stupid suggestion as I haven't done an aftermarket pulley swap, but I'd start by making sure the new pulley is on straight (tune engine over by HAND and take measurements from the flange to a fixed point). If it appears to be straight, I'd pull it off and measure the bore on the old pully and compare it to the bore on the new pulley, then measure the crank snout diameter. It is possible you have some tolerance stack up- if the crank snout is on the high, and the new pulley was machined to the low (or is undersize from the manufacturer) you'd have a problem. I'd call the pulley manufacturer for help and give him the #'s. A difference of as little as .0005" to .001" on the bore of the pulley can make a HUGE difference in how it fits on the crank. |
Re: ASP install-can't be right?(PICS) I just installed my ASP pulley, and I looks EXACTLY as his does. So Whats the answer to this? IS it OK, If it goes on anymore, the pulleys wont aline correctly. |
Re: ASP install-can't be right?(PICS) anyone? |
Re: ASP install-can't be right?(PICS) anyone to reply? I would like to know the answer to this aswell, so when I start my car up, I dont have OIL pissing everywhere. :bang: |
Re: ASP install-can't be right?(PICS) I have heard that people using the SLP double roller have had clearance issues. I have the Rollmaster double and no machining was required. |
Re: ASP install-can't be right?(PICS) OK, so buy looking at his pics, is the pully on correctly or not? If not, how do I fix mine? |
Re: ASP install-can't be right?(PICS) Sorry I haven't responded....been out of town and finals this week too! I couldn't get the bolt any tighter. When I went to back it out to put the new bolt in, it wouldn't budge. (oh crap) Had to take some pipe and put it over my breaker bar for more leverage. Got it out and this is what it looked like... http://brotherson.com/cars/images/cr...t/AUT_5311.jpg http://brotherson.com/cars/images/cr...t/AUT_5312.jpg http://brotherson.com/cars/images/cr...t/AUT_5313.jpg Something doesn't appear to be right. Maybe I wasn't getting enough threads on it when it started and it stripped. Sucked all the bolt fragments out with a magnet and debated for a while...decided to go ahead and try and put the new bolt in. Threaded in ok, then started getting tough. Ought oh....maybe this one was stripping too. It actually was giving more and we were able to get the pulley snugged up much closer than that of the above pics. I's say there's less than an eigth of an inch of that silver part showing now. Bolt wouldn't budge anymore and it was bending our breaker bar. Decided it looked pretty good, so I put the belt on it. Took it for a few spins and all is well. Won't test it on highway to see if it tosses a belt until tomorrow...was too late tonight and didn't want to have to drive 20 miles to 24hr autozone if it did. Sorry so winded....hth. -Matt |

Re: ASP install-can't be right?(PICS) OK, But mine looks the same as your did? Am I ok, the pulleys line up perfect. I impacted mine on and used red locktite, so she is stuck on there. And all you people are saying did we use a double timing chain, I DID NOT, IM USING STOCK CHAIN. Is this thing going to leak oil? Or is it just a simple thing, and im getting upset over nothing. (wont leak) |

(wont leak) I would not at all be happy knowing that I did not have the bolt properly torqued down. Installing the balancer using an impact wrench is a hack. Also the factory bolt has locktite like material on the bottom side of the bolt flange. Good luck doing any work, which requires removing the harmonic balancer. |

I just dont understand why this ASP balancer dont go all the way up like the stock one did. |
