pretty much:

-put car in reverse (for manual)
-take stock belts off
-take off stock bolt with impact gun or breaker bar with pipe for leverage
-use three jawed puller to grab three inner tabs on stock pulley, and pull off
-heat up new pulley in oven to 200 deg
-slip on pulley and press on with old bolt, longer bolt, or threaded rod and nut/washer
-torque old bolt to 240 ft-lbs and then remove
-install new GM bolt and torque to 37 ft-lbs
-turn bolt additional 140° (torque to yield bolt)
-install shorter belts
-drink beer

fwiw, I was able to slide my pulley on far enough after heating it up so that I could grab at least 3-4 crank threads to pull it on. Threaded rod is the safest bet though.

All i can say is use threaded rod for the install..

It will save you a ton of headaches

Steve Burger Dec 26, 2006 03:45 PM

Heat it up for an hour or so. It will slip on so that you can get 6-8 threads of the old bolt in. Then torque it down and follow the procedure above for the new bolt.

Nice to see the oven method mentioned. I have done this about a dozen times. Works like a charm. Y'all did make fun of me when I posted this a few years back though. :)

what does this rod bolt look like yall used to get the pulley back in? and what are my options on gettin this sucker back on there? do i have to get a new GM Bolt??

any more advice or tips would be great here i plan on doing this thursday or friday.

That's what you use if you need to pull it off again. You have to use a different type puller.

Good luck, hope you have better luck than i did,we broke two pullers trying to get that thing off,but after its off its a breeze.

Magnet Dec 27, 2006 08:10 PM

This tool is great for balancer installs: https://ls1tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=391883

Might want to get an ARP crank bolt, then it can be reused.

The PAT WS6 Dec 28, 2006 03:04 PM

thanks for all the help guys i went to auto zone and rented a harmonic ballencer install kit which is very similar to that home made one, i also got the puller, im about to attempt it here in a few.
