Be glad your piece didnt break like mine did. My break went straight up and cut the threads in half. I could still thread the bolt in but you could see half the bolt. It sucks cause essentially breaking my starter totalled the engine.

well after reading this i could have just left it alone but im going to man up and call myself out, its not the block, its part of the starter housing. the past few days have been extremely shitty for me to say the least and as soon as the starter dropped and i grabbed the bolt and saw that attached i went hysterical and assumed the worst. i grabbed the starter and took it to a starter/alternator place around here and they pointed it out, damn, i feel like a dumbass now. to my relief though it isnt the block, merely me overlooking the obvious and not even checking the tabs on the starter.....laugh it up...+1 Experience to me...

what engine do you have .. LSx(Alum) or LQx/LMx (Iron) block ?
It looks like it is steel/iron from the pic.. and if that part and bolt is how you found it.. I would assume that it is your starter or bracket.. normally the bolt goes through the part and then is secured to the block.. Bold/part/block...

Find a really good mobile welder or a good welding/machine shop. So far I've had 2 of these fabbed back after they were broken. Sometimes the break is too severe and you'll just have to shell out for a block. But...good luck with that.
