which sensor controls rpm's??

my rpms stoped working acouple days ago...i was wondering if a sensor or something went bad? or do i need to check for something? anyone have this problem before??

Do you mean to say that your tachometer stopped working?

FU_I_AM_UltraZ Jan 9, 2007 09:09 PM

i'm guess he meant tach too... i forget which sensor... it's the cam i think that reads the RPMs... I think... that are the crank sensor...

383camaroSS Jan 9, 2007 09:15 PM

yeah my tach...where can i find the crank sensor??

00454sscamaro Jan 9, 2007 10:01 PM

crank sensors right above the starter in the block, cam sensors behind the manifold right nexto the oil psi sending unit..

thanks

Wouldn't he be getting a code if the crank sensor failed?

ArcticZ28 Jan 12, 2007 07:25 PM

Yea, if it was the crank sensor it wouldn't be running (at least not tolerably). Gotta be the wiring from the PCM or a connection on the dash.

i didnt get a code just ran worse and worse till it wouldnt start at all..

But this guy's car is still running, he just apparently gets no reading from the tach.

Same Problem

I have a 99 SS with an LSX 383.. (how I purchased the car) The tach has not worked since I bought it.. cam sensor has been changed (so I was told) but I have a feeling the crank sensor is the problem.. unfortunately there were other issues I found after I bought the car which were not disclosed and appeared as if they were attempted to be hidden.

Without that crank sensor you wont be running. Computer wont know when to fire ignition so I don't think there's any failsafe for that. cam sensor is just a 1x so that tells the computer whether its on intake or exhaust stroke. If its not reading anything on tach but engine is running I would look at either dash / dash wiring / or tach output from your pcm

Mjfoss17 Apr 20, 2018 05:15 PM

Engine runs, there just isn’t any reading on the tach. I figured at some point I’d have to check within the dash for the problem. Thanks for the info!

The stepper motors in the dash are NOTORIOUS for just flaking out.

Check ebay for "stepper motor kit" and kinda go from there.

Right on! I’ll check it out!!! Thanks

On a '99 it's not just the 'pull-up' resistor?
