Electric Cutout or Catback?

I was wondering, which is better? I was thinking on either a Quick Time electric cutout(like $150) or a Magnaflow or Hooker catback(like $400). What are your opinions on the two? The cutout costs about half the price of the catback, but will it not have as good of gains?

This would be going along side a set of longtubes and o/r y-pipe. The current catback is stock.

Why not both?

Do a catback with a non-electric cut out on it. Best of both worlds. When you really feel like being loud, take 2 bolts off.

A quiet system like hooker or b&b with a qtp cutout :)

Stock Catback + Cutout FTMFW!

I'll be going with a stock catback and a e-cutout. Hopefully the car will be quieter with it on. And then whenever you want people to know that your coming then just press a button. Another idea that I had is just add some cool looking tips.

go non-electric, like $30, and a catback, then you can always go back later and throw a mccord or something on there if it gets to be too much of a hassle

I don't know about you, but laying on my back trying to cap the damn thing is NOT my idea of fun. Wouldn't give up my E-unit for anything. :judge:

I"ve got the B&B with the manual cutouts and it works for me :judge:

Well, I was thinking that if I did a cutout, it would save me a couple hundred. Then I could put that towards a cam, otherwise it may take longer. The reason I would only like to run 1 or the other is cost wise. I also don't want it to be extremely loud, so cops won't pull me over(why I want electric), just click it open when I need to race, otherwise its closed.

The stock cat-back will become a restriction with LT's and ORY upstream. I would def. get a catback to complement your headers and ORY for all driving, and get a cutout for when you want it stupid loud. You could use the stock catback for a while I guess-it would give you time to save for a nice catback.

The Black Mamba 07-14-2007 07:23 PM

I want one or the other, I would not get both.

Red99TA 07-14-2007 08:22 PM

I say catback just because it looks better and it's a constant good sound. I admit that I love my e-cutout but I would hate having a stock catback with it. A good flowing catback will not give up much to an open cutout.

Both, or Borla with a QTEC inside it.

Peace,
Craig.

If HP gains are your main focus, go with the electric cut-out. A friend of mine has an '02 Firehawk (Stock). Cut-out closed the car pulled 315 on the dyno. Cut-out open the car pulled 325. That was through stock manifolds, cats, and the upgraded SS SLP dual dual echaust. It really doesn't matter what kind of cat-back is on the car, if you're running a cut-out. Just my opinion, the cut-out will definitely give you more of a power gain!

i would go with dual cutouts with the stock catback. i have longtubes with dual cutouts clamped directly to them. i luv them!!

That's got to be loud...Do you have dual electrics?

BigKap94z 07-15-2007 02:57 PM

If doing one or the other I guess go with the catback. First and foremost cutouts just don't sound very good, IMO. I have the Hooker catback, its quiet but flows well. At over 400rwhp I only picked up 2hp/3tq with cutout open vs threw the catback. Just make sure you get a good flowiing catback, and not something like a flowmaster.

All my mods have been best bang for the buck, one of my first mods was the cut out. But after getting rained out at the track and laying in a puddle to put the plate on, I bit the bullet and bought a QTP electric cut out. I too with stock 01 manifolds and Bassani ORP gained 11 hp with cut out opened, back to back pulls.

melchoir 07-16-2007 10:24 AM

I have a magnaflow, and at times even it's too loud (driving around a city known for asshole cops when it's late at night and you're the only one on the road...). I would recommend an electric cutout with the stock catback, to do it all over again that's what I'd probably end up doing.
