Can't get crank pulley off Hey guys, Need some help here. I can't get the crank pulley off my 02 Z06. Are there any secrets to this? any tips? I'm about fed up with it. I'm using the 3 arm jaw puller. I was thinking to cut the outside part off and grab the middle with the jaws. I have a new UD Pulley, so i don't need the stocker. Any ideas guys. Josh |
I'm not sure if the tools are the same, but I had major problems pulling off my power steering pulley. If its a pressed on pulley, try giving more slack on the threads. I know that doesn't sound like it makes sense, but I had the puller tightened up too tight against the pulley, and didn't have enough thread to pull it out. Didn't realize it till hours later. Also, make sure you're using a breaker bar. It takes a lot to break those free. |
# jaw puller. If it's giving you a hard time try some heat. |
thanks for the advice guys. I went ahead and left it for now before I got pissed and broke something else. I'm using Tim's tool to do the valvesprings right now. It's working perfectly, which is helping my attitude and increasing my optimism. Thanks, I will try the breaker bar tip first b/c I'm pretty sure I got to that point but didn't want to mess the tool. Now I don't care, I just want the pulley off. I'll try heat if that doesn't work. Thanks again guys, Josh |
pully yea im kinda in teh same bolt on my gto, i cant get the bolt to turn at all, even with a good impact, what do i need to do apply some heat to the bolt wd 40 big breaker bar , what ? |
I had a hell of a time trying to pull my old Powerbond UD pulley off my crank with a 3-jaw puller. I damn near ended up breaking it, and still couldn't get it off. I had to use a different style puller (the late model Chrysler harmonic balancer puller), but that wouldn't fit on a stock diameter balancer. I think the key is making sure the shaft of the 3-jaw puller is centered exactly in the crank. |
I finally got it out. It's a matter of playing with the many settings that stupid thing has. We finally managed to get 2 jaws on the center section and the last one on the outer section from inside. That jaw was bolted right to the black part of the tool. it was a pain, but finally came out. The bolt is royally F*cked though. It's stripped out in 2 places. What a cheap piece of crap. Thanks for the help guys. Josh |
Glad to hear you got it out. I know how much of a bitch pulleys and their tools can be. |

I used the three arm jaw puller, but you cannot do it as pictured in ls1howto.com. I bent two rods, I switched it so it was as short as it could get and it came right off. |
