Thumbs down for XS headers

Car was driving fine when all of a sudden I started having a bad misfire problem and could hear the tick of an exhaust leak. I could tell it was coming from the passenger side header and upon further inspection, noticed that the tube that the AIR system connects to was broken. There was absolutely no force put on the tube to cause this. I find it strange due to the fact that it was halfway up the tube, not at the weld but have no idea how it happened. It's not that big of a deal since I deleted AIR and EGR so the tubes are capped anyways. I just welded the hole closed, which I probably should have done in the first place...

These have only been on my car for this summer with limited miles being put on. Maybe that's why they now only make the race version! On the other hand, the headers seem to fit well, look very nice, and haven't given me a problem up until now...

Can't say I am really suprised honestly.

I got the race style anyway. I like them a lot. They look nice sitting in my shop.

RevGTO 09-08-2007 08:55 AM

Happens on every brand of header ... race style or stay stock.

orangeapeel 09-08-2007 08:56 AM

I didn't give mine the chance. They have been converted to race style.

RedRallyeZ 09-08-2007 09:01 AM

converted to race style before they went on, but i remember researching and that happens to a ton of people with all kinds of headers

orangeapeel 09-08-2007 09:03 AM

That is only because emissions are for suckers. :P

Glad I got rid of them then... I don't wanna be a sucker!

Anyway, I wonder what the EPA is gonna start cranking down on next as far as performance? If I still had the emissions stuff that I ground off my headers I would bubble wrap and send it to them in a box with my "inpsection passed" paper.

RevGTO 09-08-2007 09:21 AM

I would have gone emissions style but for reading a zillion reports of this happening. One guy had it a happen on a long trip, a few hundred miles from home ... lotsa fun. That was persuasive enough for me.

do some looking on the XS turbo manifolds for hondas. Wastegate tubes just break off runners crack out. Tons of horror storys. Except back then they were called SS Autochrome.

you get what you pay for

...junk

Ashes 09-08-2007 11:48 AM

You get what you pay more for too.... more junk. Price doesn't mean much if you can't offer support and a good product. Most people wouldn't buy higher priced (may or may not be higher quality) headers from people who just took the money and ran. Because you get what you pay for.... more money means your obviously getting a better product. (/sarcasm)

studderin 09-08-2007 11:58 AM

well you not paying for quailty contraol, or a staff that loves about LSx's thats for sure.

china+your apartment PC= Estore and killing the real industry.

That's your favorite phrase isn't it lol..

I gaurentee the same thing would happen to your beloved ARH's if they had capped emissions. Like someone else said this happens with pretty much any brand of header with capped emissions...

studderin 09-08-2007 12:04 PM

No if anything running a heavier air/erg tube stressed that weld more. And it would have failed sooner.

The XS welding sucks, it looks like the do a muti tacks with a mig, So it looks like TIG. But regardless, the beads are spaced way out, and the penatrion is very week.

if i read correctly it didn't break at the welds

Soul TKR 09-08-2007 01:21 PM

back in the day when I had my old V6 i had bought some RKSport headers for it and the same piece broke off on those but it was at the welds... I agree for the most part that it's a weak link in any brand of header just because the part is so small and thin there's not so much you can do about it, and i'm sure as an emissions piece that most companies don't exactley focus all their abilities and skills on that one little part, which is fine by me because i'd rather them focus more on the rest of the header...

That's god's way of telling you not to put ebay parts on your car.
