Long distance driving w/ TD's.

I would like to know if anyone has ever gone on a long drive, let's say about 12 hrs, with true duals. I want to know if it was tolerable or unbearable. I have to drive to San Diego, CA from Albuquerque, NM in a few months and I'm concerned about the drive. I'm thinking of going back to a "Y" set-up to make it a more comfortable drive. The other concern I have is when I get to Cali, how bad the cops are going to harass me because of the loudness and of course the CA emissions crap. I'm going to live there for 3 months also. So what do you guys think?

Ghostintheshell Oct 18, 2007 11:50 AM

That's really a personal decision of "unbearable"

bring some earplugs if your worried.

If it's highway driving I wouldn't worry to much about it. Once the converter locks up on the highway and you keep your for out of it, it should be pretty timid.

yeah once my verter locks car is farely quiet.....

I did 120 miles with an open cutout with a family of four. We had the windows up and the kids were watchin videos in the back and I kept tellin' them to turn the video dow, so if I could esily hear their videos over an open cutout, duals should be fine...for me at least.

i have a big cam, kooks lts and texas speed duals w/ sweet thunders i have taken the car on a few 4+ hour trips. It's not fun, I roll with the windows down so don't hear little rattles .. but the duals are definitely worth it.

I drove an 8 hour trip on open headers...loved every second of it.

Z28/2002 Oct 18, 2007 08:08 PM

I had TSP duals on my Z28 and made numerous trips from NC to OH (7 hours from base to my parents house) and it wasn't too bad.

I've made 120 mile trip with an open cutout lots of times. The drone is not fun but its not unbearable so duals out the back shouldn't be too bad.

You'll be fine. The cops dont really worry about the exhaust. But i've seen people from SD that have been ticketed for their exhaust. But i think they had aggressive cams

if your car is not registered in CA, then you cannot get a ticket for not having CA legal emissions.

Like I wanted to register my car in michigan so that I could have tints and no front plate legally.

Well, uh, that's not exactly true.

Yeah, it gets you out of smog, but it doesn't let you change the appearance. Tint/plate/etc. laws have nothing to do with where the car is registered.

Back to the OP, I've done a couple of 3-4 hour drives and it really is not bad at all. Then again I was cruising at like 1600 in sixth, but whatever.

Oh, and SD cops generally like muscle cars. I mean, if you're speeding, they'll pull you over, but I've never been pulled simply for exhaust.

thats b/c your exhasut is dumped. Run the tail pipes out the back and see what a differnce it makes.

I have TDs as well.. i have tail pipes, i did dump it for a day.. thought i was going to blow my brians out. the lope from the cam and the fact the exahsut was dumped. I thought that my car was going to rattle apart. With the windows up and the T-tops on... OMG i changed it sooo fast and never looked back

Thanks for all who chimed in. I feel better knowing the drive shouldn't be too bad, I would really hate to change back to a "Y". I don't have a cam like some of you so hopefully I'll go unnoticed while I'm in SD.

I drove 2300 miles with dumped Sweet Thunders.....I was ready to blow my brains out about 1 hour into the trip. Now I have them out the back and it's loud as hell with the cam, but tolerable inside.

Same thing i said couple posts above you. With TDs dumped with a cam.... Ehhh not a good idea

i do 5 hour drives and if anythig its just annoying. i turn my music up and just go deaf...no biggie :bang:

dont use earplugs, thats illegal and not safe

GT Griller Oct 19, 2007 01:34 PM

Ive run a cut-out and now my duals on the highway all the time, its actually really quiet and i dont have any drone at highway speeds.

3.4camaro Oct 19, 2007 01:44 PM

Hmm. I drive back and forth from Dallas to Houston. 4 hours. TDs, bullets, 228/230 cam. Maybe I love my car more than you guys, because driving long distance is my number one stress reliever.

El_Diablo Oct 20, 2007 12:09 PM

I've made the trip from San Diego to Oklahoma and back quite a few times with my old TSP true duals. Sweet thunders ran out into a CME. I loved it. A police officer in Carlsbad didn't. My car is registered in Oklahoma and I was the happy new owner of a $100 and something ticket that I had to pay. <--this was when it was a bolt-on car.
