World's oldest living set of Grotyohann headers? Hopefully I am not jinxing myself by posting this :) Does anyone still run these headers? At the time these were the only true longtube headers on the market and were a royal pain for most to get. Many crazy long wait times (many months). I got lucky and Cartek had a set in stock and I had them in 3 days. Installed them in 4/00 and made 28rwhp with an off-road y-pipe. I know many folks that have them rust and fall apart after a few years, but somehow these have stayed together for almost 8 years now. The do leak some and I had 3 bolt flanges added, but over all they have held together pretty well. Just wondering if these headers are still out there? |
In a way yes. Almost EVERY LS1 F-Body Long Tube Header out there has been somewhat of a copy of this design, with the notable exceptions of SLP, FLP, and DynaTech. Other people are offering this 'design' with other collector options, and different primary diameters, but the basic design is the same. |
Mine still look good, they're whores and have been on at least 4 different cars (soon to be 5) only a little rust where the 1 pipe scraped passenger side, only reason for removal, is plans have changed on the car. Ryan |
Oops. Sorry Mods. Meant to post this in the Ls1 ext section. DOH! |
Hi Mark, Glad to see you are still around. I still have mine, not as old as yours. Thinking of doing a bigger motor so I just bought a set of 1 7/8 AR headers. One of the emission fittings fell off but basically they are in pretty good shape. I remember when you told me dug a hole in your front yard to get your headers in. |
I have a set of Grotyohan headers on my 96 Impala. They're about 7 years old, I think. |
LOL I had a set from TByrne's GP back in 1998, sold them to Lane (CMNTMXR57), and I'm not sure where they are now. |
So who has the closet replica to the Grots? From what I understand, These were the best setup every. Are the XS's setup after the Grots? |
And BTW. If this is Mark 1MadSS that went 11's with just headers, gears, and suspension, then you are talking to someone that witnessed it at bradenton. Yours was the first Pewter SS to go 11's with that setup and nobody believed you. Tim |
I have a set on my car. I haved owned the car for 4 years and im not sure how long they were on the car before that but they are atleast 4 years old. |
Good to hear that I might not to replace them soon. I've got a fair amount of rust on the collectors. Must have been all the scratches I put on them while laying in that hole. Wait I didn't lay in the hole to put them on, I convinced my wife to :D Ahh, Bradenton. I do truly miss that place. Even Sunshine was a lot of fun. Funny that those SI times are not even good enough to get on the list these days, but at least I was the first M6 to do it ( like that matters  ) Bill and Tim, good to hear from FL folks. Hope things are going well. |
I bought my car with them on. I believe they're around 4 years old, maybe less or more. They still look great with the exception of a little surface rust. |
I was just thinking about those headers the other day. Don't know why. I was on the long waiting list in 1999, then bought a set of SLP's when they first came out. I should have waited on the Grotts. Now I have Kooks |

G'hanns were good but his y-pipe was terrible. Of course nothing beats the dual exhaust he sold for the LT1's, right Geoff? :) |
Hey Mark!! As you know I got my grotts at the same time. They aren't the prettiest things on the car any more but they are still alive and well. I had the AIR pipe fly off during a dyno run and also added 3 bolt flanges when I switched to a true dual X pipe setup. As a matter of fact, now that the wedding and everything is over I've finally started wrenching on the car again. Good to see you are still out there and doing well. |
Mine were in good shape 2 years ago when I wrecked my car. I know they got resold, but have lost track of them. |
10 years old almost to the day Here are whats left of my Grotyhanns at 10 years old :) Driver side http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/c...Rebuild002.jpg A lot of rust around the collectors http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/c...Rebuild004.jpg The passenger side was worse. Here it is after some wire wheel and rust remover. Still pretty ugly. http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/c...Rebuild007.jpg I spun a bearing in my stock shortblock last year and I am in the process of swapping in a 402. I thought I would take a couple of pics while they were out. At this stage I'm not sure if they really qualify as "living" or not |
I remember those headers were pretty popular back in the LT1 days but havent heard of them on any/many LS1's. |
I have a set sitting in my shop I just swapped for ARH 1 7/8, they have been great headers, and been on 4+ cars. They have had there issues =0) blew the air fitting off, and had one primary break off the collector, but all had been fixed and they ran great until I just took them off, and I am sure when I sell them they will continue to work well. |
