Question Which pulleys when bad make a loud mettalic whinning noise?

Just picked up a 00 Formula today. On other LS1 cars I have owned i have had belt squeal but never a metallic whine. Its hard to explain but my guess is it sounds similar to a bad bearing. What do you think?

There are several pulleys this could be... The best way to check this is to take the belt off and jack the car up on stands in the front. All you have to do is spin the different pulleys and you will know when one is bad... you will hear the bearings.... Just make sure it is quiet so you can hear them when you spin them by hand... You will also be able to tell by the way it slows down.... slowly instead of all at once... Pulleys that usually go bad are the idler pulley, and tensioner pulleys for the ac and for your regular serpentine...

Prob alternator, or a PS fluid with bad bearings, like said, pull the belt and spin by hand.

Does it go away when you turn on the AC and the compressor is running? I had a metallic sound on mine that was the AC Compressor clutch going bad. eventually it got really bad and one night the clutch seized but I've heard several f-bodies with the same metallic sound all of which was a Compressor.

my engine isn't running but the alt and the ac compressor are both gritty and I'd imagine they'd make that sound when running, the clutch is by far the worst of the two though.

try starting the car witht he belt off. this way you can eliminate the crank pulley or water pump that is making the noise.

Got it fellas!! Thanks! Idler pulley was the culprit! Also just for note the dealership said there is a difference in series. One with a silver dust shield and one with black. My car looked different from the one in the box but it works fine!
