cut out on stock exhaust im going to put a 3in dhm cutout on the stock I pipe what kinda gains can i expect? To explain a little i might in the future do LT's but not now i want the car mostly stock so i am picking up an extra Y pipe and adding this on...Ive been told it wont sound great but i can close it... what are normal gains? im guessing 10hp maybe |
about 10hp. And it will sound decent through your cats. You will leave the cap off...trust me. :D |

I had a cut out for a while and i think it was the best mod i could have bought. maybe its just be but it felt like my car was able to finally breath out better. i actually felt and noticed the gains when i raced my friends ss. |
I run mine open all the time too. It sounds pretty good, not loud enough for me, which is why I'm getting ready to do LT's and true duals dumped, but sounds pretty good for a quick fix. Mine isn't completely stock exhaust though. |
A cutout is quite honestly the best mod you can start with IMO. The ability to roar around, and yet go down the highway without earplugs in. It sounds great and even if you don't get huge gains; it sure as f#ck sounds like it! |
Def go for it :) I love the sound of the cutout open through the cats |

I just did back to back dyno runs on my stock manifold and catback car, only exhaust mod was the cutout. Lost 6 hp/tq with the cap closed. This was on an SS catback though, so it may be a little more in your case. |
alright good to know i have an aftermarket catback, not sure what brand i bought it with it and when i got under the car didnt see a brand anywhere on it, its 3in though...im not to sure how to wire it up but im sure my dad will hes an electric engineer and ill search for a how to...thanks for the responses |
I would forgo the electronic cutout and just use a manual one. (It's a tough environment under there.) If you will be welding it in, try to get a cutout of like metal to the pipe where it will be installed or it will be harder to get a good weld. (The stock pipe is not stainless steel.) |
where in the exhaust is the best place to install? |
|
Get the cutout put on ASAP....it sounds pretty freakin good on a stock system. |
theres a good walk through on electronic cutout heres link https://ls1tech.com/forums/generation-iii-external-engine/842950-howto-electric-cutout-install.html im buying a stock y pipe with a manual cutout already on it i just like the idea of being able to go from open to closed with a button |
I gained 11rwhp opened to closed on stock SS cat back. One of my first mods, but with ORY and cutout opened sounds like crap below 4000rpms- sounds like muffler fell off, but when running through the gears-higher rpms- awesome:drive: |
im hoping for around 10 and from all thecomments cant wait to hear what it sounds like |
You can prob get close to 10hp. Its really the stock cats that hold the flow back but it def helps to bypass the muffler. Trust me you will love the sound with it |
I left mine open all the time as well... cutout was my second mod, after SLP flowpac. I can post a video later of when my car stock with those two mods, plate open :) |
yeeesh! I couldn't imagine having to crawl under the car to open my cutout everytime. It would deffinantly spend more time open i guess! |
