Ya'll help me decide on this please......

I've got $1500 to spend. I still have an LS1 intake, but want to do a cam swap. Should I go ahead and do the cam swap, then later get an LS6 or equivalent intake? Or should I get an LS6 or equivalent intake then save up the rest of the money to do the cam swap? I know the LS1 intake will rob me alot, but will it be enough to matter for the time being? Meaning if you don't know what your missing will you? Been really thinking about a 78mm fast setup lately, but I'm torn on what I want to do first. I've read and searched on what does what and I'm ready to do something now that I have some money. I could go either way just wanted some opinions from ya'll to get me going I guess. Help me decide please and thanks in advance.

NOTE: I already have a 9", rear suspension, 3.5" driveshaft, built M6, a good clutch, full exhaust, free mods, SLP lid. So now it's time for something to add more power.

P.S. I want to stay N/A for now, so no N20 suggestion's please.

personally i went LS6 intake and induction before i did cam and stuff but thats cause i daily drive mine. i would get LS6 over the 78mm Fast.

blue98Z Apr 28, 2008 02:22 PM

^^^I'm assuming because of price? I know I can pick up an LS6 for about $350 on here. I've also read up on both. My buddy went from an LS6 to the 78mm fast and didn't notice a difference, so I figure they're pretty much the same just price is different.

You should do a search on free mods and see what it brings up I'm sure there are some guys on here that can tell you what you can do for little to no money at all. Have you thought about getting some headers? I'm sure you can get your intake and headers and have a little money left over. good luck.

I'm already a bolt-on car. Only thing left that I really want to do right now is cam/intake. I've got the money to do one or the other right now, but not both.

94TRANS Apr 28, 2008 02:44 PM

if you go intake you could also get a ported and polished throttle body to replace the stock to help out, thats what i did.

For 1500 you could get a cam package, dyno tune, and ls6 intake. Why not just do it all at once?

This is the list I have:
TSP cam/spring package-$700
LS6 intake-$350
Summit 25% U/D pulley-$160
Gasket kit-$68
SLP oil pump/ timing chain-$315

All of this totals-$1593 not including shipping. Now I could knock off the U/D pulley and it would only cost me $1433 w/out shipping. Where can I get a dyno tune for $67? Not trying to be an ass or anything, just pointing out what I've found and prices. If you can direct me somewhere with better prices please do.

Just use a ls2 timing chain $35-$40
And a ls6 oil pump $160-$170

$200 instead of $315

I had thought about that also, but was worried about the timing gears being worn and then having to buy another timing set just for the gears. The engine only has about 47k on it so I would think the gears would be fine, but getting into all of this I just want to make sure it's all done right so I don't have to go back in. I actually had found the LS6 oil pump for $100 at speed inc I think.

I'd do it all at once, or intake first.

If you do the cam you're gonna need a tune. If you tune it with the LS1 manifold, and then swap it out, you'll probably want to have it retuned which will cost you more in the end. If you do the manifold first, you'll only have to tune it once.

You make a good point. I didn't think about the A/F changing up with a different manifold. You think it would change that much to consider?

WS6addiction Apr 28, 2008 06:00 PM

Might not be much, but I think you would be leaving power on the table. I believe in doing things right the first time. ;)

Detoxx03 Apr 28, 2008 06:01 PM

Do a cam package and a tune and then save money for some good heads and a 92mm combo

Another good point. Since that's the next step and requires a retune anyway, you could run the LS1 until then.

Wicked_muscle Apr 28, 2008 06:41 PM

you can get the cam and the ls6 manifold for under $1500 but you won't have much left over for a tune. Look around for better prices. ported ls6 oil pump about $120, ls2 chain $40, cam about $389.... Also, that tsp cam/spring package includes both I believe so you don't need to be buying another cam for $350.

MikeG Apr 28, 2008 06:50 PM

You could also look into some used parts other than the obvious used intake. You could probably find the cam/springs/pushrods in the FS section on here for a fraction of the cost. Used parts are a great deal most of the time IMO. Do that then a dynotune should fit into your budget as well.

That actually sounds pretty good. I do plan on heads later, but don't know how far down the road that will be. I got a guy that does real good tuning and several fast cars under his belt, so tuning isn't a problem and not that expensive through him. Thanks for the input guys keep'em coming. Detoxx's idea sounds like the way to go.

Your timing gear wont be worn
