Couple Pacesetter Install Q's Well I got started on my header install today and it was just as much of a pain as I remembered. I worked about 4 hours and all we got done was to take off the old stuff (manifolds, cats, y pipe ect....). I havent begun the plugs yet or anything. Having a lift was extremely helpful though :D. But I have a couple of questions... 1. Do any of you use the paper gaskets over the stockers, or should I just go to Oreillys and get some new metal ones. 2. I busted the end off of a plug...I have never done this before, is it ok? Do I just unscrew it like normal? 3. I unbolted the dipstick bolt near the head, but that thing will not come out of the oil pan for anything. Is there something else holding it on? My pass side manifold is just sitting there because I cant get the manifold over the tab on the dipstick. 4. Do you do plugs before or after you put the headers in? I figure Im gonna try to do it with the headers unbolted but in so I have some room. |
1. Save yourself the trouble and get some metal ones, i used the paper ones they sent me and both of them blew out in 3days...i went to autozone and got some fel-pros for $11 bucks and havent had a problem since. 3. I just unbolted mine and it came right out, i dunno whats holding urs back? 4. I bolted mine up completely before i did the plugs and wires, i didnt want the headers to fall and break them Hope this helps you and good luck, it took me and a friend about 9 hours, we werent trying to set a record though lol, not to mention we only had jackstands, it will all be worth it in the end though.. Unscrew the plug and check the threads just to make sure. If all looks well i wouldn't worry too much about it. Just be more careful next time around. If you leave a few plugs in you can put the header in through the bottom and GENTLY hang it on the plugs and then move up to the top and bolt them up. Then switch the plugs with the new ones while your stitching her back up. It would still be better to have a friend catch them as you put them up though. Also the disptick tube is almost pressed in so a little finesse is required to pull her out. Some times it helps to have a friend tugging a bit from the top while you push from the bottom. |
1.metal ones 2.unscrew as usual 3.just pulls out, could have a lil corrosion at the oring 4. plugs before headers much easier just be careful and have buddy help |
1. get GM metal ones from the dealer 2. unscrew it like normal. 3. wiggle it around. it will come out if you go the bolt out 4 i did my plugs with the headers in. everyone makes such a big deal about it but its not hard at all good luck. take pictures |
1. Use MLS ones from the dealer 2. Just unscrew it 3. Pull harder 4. After so you dont break another one |
I got everything in finally. It was definitely a bitch though. I cant get all my header bolts to seat on the header though? Its like the bolts are too long or something (used the supplied bolts from pacesetter). What do I do about this? I tightened from the center two bolts outwards, tightened from outwards toward the center, and tried to get them all tightened down a little at a time even with the same results. And Im gonna have to get a new dipstick I bent mine all to hell. |
Reuse stockers if you can.. worked perfect for me The pacesetter bolts are a longer and some people use washers on the back.. Also not a 10mm is it ? |

same here on the bolts. went to a hardware store and got sum that were perfect |
Well I guess its time to take out all the header bolts and replace them. Maybe I can find all of my stock ones, they got kind of jumbled around. Thats gonna be fun though.... :-(. I was really happy when I got the last one in. Lol |
haha, I hear you man Did the same stuff you did last week.. and after one week of running Lt's-ORY-dumped bullet off the y.. it already is quiet to me :) But I LOVE IT. Just wait till you fire it up with open LT's |
Yes the supplied bolts are too long, I thought maybe it was a onetime mistake when they sent mine, but I guess Pacesetter should rethink the bolt length! The paper gaskets suck, re-use the stockers or get a brand new stainless steel set from an auto store, should run you about 11$ |
Yea I have been driving it with open headers until I can get my TSP TD's on. Surprisingly no header leaks, but I will be changing out the bolts. |
