317's on a LS1/383

Is there benefit to running these heads on a stroked ls1(383) ? I know they'll bring my compression to 10.4:1 which is cool for me ! I'm not planning on boosting or Nitrous....Well maybe S/C in the future ! I wanna get 450+ whp, oroiginally I was thinking LS6 heads but the 317's are cheaper and don't come with the sodium filled valves. LS6 heads would put my compression to 11.3:1 which is still streetable, I just need help deciding what heads for sure I'm going to use !

Anyone ?

317's should be fine if you dont mind the lower compression. I would look for some 243's myself. Might get more replies in internal section.

Either way will be better than you stock ls1 heads. think about what you are going to be doing down the road as well. If you go with the 243's your probably looking at $500ish 11.3 is a little high for any forced induction but great for NA as well as nitrous.

Now 317's can be had for $200ish. 10.4 isnt bad for NA, some .040 gaskets would get you 10.7. For that extra $300 you could have larger valves installed as well which will help flow even more.

Also remember that a larger than stock cam will bleed off dcr compression and thats what really matters so if you have a large cam in the 383, the 10.4 scr might be in the mid 7's dcr which is to low.

you could always have them milled. patriot used 317 heads and welded the chambers to get the same compression as ls6 heads.

Sorry ! My bad about posting here instead of internal ! My intentions are to go NA, I found out how much turbo or S/C cost and was not willing to spend the extra cash just so I could pop it(I read some of the horror stories too).

I do plan on a big cam and 243's is what was thinking at first and then I found 2 sets of 317's for dirt cheap(but I didn't get them). But I think I'll get the 243's now that I know that the cam will bring down the compression.

Considering what my dad paid for his Trickflows($1500+) for his L98 Vette, $500-600 for some 243's don't sound bad.

You might want to check out tsp heads. For the money they are some of the best out there. If you are staying NA check out these 5.3l heads that have been fully cncd with larger valves and include prc double springs for $1100. If you need springs for a cam anyway the heads are only costing $850. The bump in compression will wake up the response of the motor and pick up a little more power as well.

They also have new 243's cncd for $1070 with larger valves as well.

Either of these heads would probably pick up at least 20hp over the stock 243 head and dont cost a whole lot more.
