Do you have headers? Exhaust leaks will tick and the tick will get faster with RPM. They also sometimes go away when the gasket gets hot and expands a little. Easy way to check is to listen and put your hand over the header/manifold where it sounds like it's ticking and see if you feel a "put-put-put" of air against your hand.

I've had this problem a couple different times and it had a couple different solutions. Even if you have the stock manifolds check for an exhaust leak to rule that out.

The other time I had a loose rocker arm, I could put my hand on the valve cover and feel a pretty solid ticking where the arm was hitting up against it. If you can feel something, or if it sounds like it's coming from under there you might want to pull the valve covers and make sure everything is how it should be.

If you've ruled out those two then use your ear as best you can to try to find out where the ticking is coming from and then go from there.

It might be the lifters too. GM is famous for it. No big deal though. Just annoying.

ok i think ive gone nuts... i spent the last 2 hrs with a screwdriver to my damned ear.... not a sound from the valve covers... it seems to be louder under the car near the starter area.....

a year ago i replaced my starter and when i took the old one out the aluminum nose piece was broken off... inside the housing i am assuming.... COULD this be what i am hearing.... wouldnt it be loose and rattling rather than one place and increasing in tapping when i rev..... help me guys im at a loss..... like i said... it appears lounder underneath....

Go check for exhaust leaks. I just had my cat blow out the flange welds where it connects to the manifolds. Sounded like a lifter tick untill it finally blew all the way out.

your sure it's not a knock instead of a tick? You may be over examining piston slap. Every ls motor eventually gets it and it varies characteristics. If all is running ok I then I wouldn't sweat it.
