gmmusclecarman's big 408 build thread! Im sure many have you have seen my threads relating to this topic and now im finally ready to start! Im going to be pulling the engine from the top and im starting with removing the trans first. Im sure im going to have ALOT of questions as i do this since this is the first time ive ever done anything near this extensive. So i will include all my questions in one big thread rather than making a million other threads. alright on to my first question. Im starting with pulling the trans today. i think ive got most of it covered just one thing. will i need to bleed the clutch in order to do this? And how will i be able to get the clutch hydraulic line out of the side of the trans? If i need to bleed the clutch can someone link me to a tutorial to do so? thanks! |
good luck dude im in the middle of a 370 build myself but i have a lift so it wasent to bad took me about 5 hours total to drop it first time also just take your time and make sure everything is unpluged youll be alright ill try and keep up with the post |
no youll need to bleed the clucth when u reinstll the slave if u disconect it u can disconect it from the side at the quick disconect but its a bitch to do or u can do what i do when i change cluthces get the trany lose and pull it out about 4 to 6 inches away from the bellhousing just to the point wear the input shaft is going to slide out and stop their will be 2 10mil bolts holding the slave 2 the trany take those out and slide the trany the rest of the way out as u slide the slave off of the input shaft and let it hang or tie it up to something u wont ahve to bleed anything that way cause u never broke the system hope i explained it good its easier for me to do it than to explain it |
im going to be installing the tick master cylinder and a new slave later when i put everything back together so should i expect a mess when i disconnect the slave cylinder? |
how can i remove the 4 driveshaft bolts that attach it to the rear diff? there isnt enough room to get a socket on them with the wrench attached. i tried a regular open end wrench but that just ended up starting to strip it and yes it was the right size. |
no that will be the cleanest part of your engine fluids but bleadeing ls1 systems can be a pain the ass i just use a wrench to do my driveshaft nuts |

trying to take out the radiator right now. it doesnt seem to be bolted down to anything really. the drivers side is loose and ready to come out but the passenger side is getting stuck on something and it also seems like it wants to bring the ac condensor with it. i am planning on removing the ac so will it be all right to disconnect the ac compressor from the condensor without having fluids or something spill all over the place? and also when its time to put the radiator back in will there be fitment problems without the condensor being in too? EDIT: got it! |

I will be running some dumped TD's when shes back on the road. got some more project pics coming soon! |

ive got all the accessories/pulleys off except for the crank and water pump. do those need to come off too or can i just take them off once the engine is out of the car? after that, what is there to do? I know i need to remove the intake manifold and fuel rails but i dont have a fuel line disconnector tool. |

you don't have to pull the fuel lines. Just disconnect them from the intake and swing them out of the way. I always set it towards the driverside fender. And I usually leave the pulley on, and don't see why u can't leave the waterpump on ad well |
