Default Has ANYONE broken a "blue stripe" 918?

I've been reading around and driving myself crazy trying to decide on the valvesprings for my new heads. I will be running a cam with .59x lift on the intake and exhaust and 23x duration on intake and exhaust. The more I have thought about it, the more I like the idea of having a "lightweight" 918 with Ti retainers over the heavy 978's or 977's and all the hassle of worrying about those springs collapsing a lifter. I haven't read of a blue stripe 918 failure yet, does anyone know of one? If so, what were the cam specs?
thanks

all springs eventually break....length of time till they break dependes on your driving style and howw many rpm's they've been thru....

what a revelation!!

But that didn't help me on my real question. I'm thinking about using the 918's on a large camshaft and I'd like evidence of 918 failure that is supported by data such as camshaft characteristics and any other contributing factors.

gomer, I would use them. I haven't see any failures with the blue stripe springs myself, and know quite a few guys that use them.

I would go with what the vendor recommends. Unless this is a cam of your own design.. I have a 232/236 cam with .59x lift.. I am running 918's now for 5k miles with no problems..

Gomer,
I would either go with a smaller cam or more spring. I talked to Terry yesterday about your heads and sounds promosing. Why not try a big duration XE cam on a 112lsa? From what Terry was saying about your flow #s a nice XE 230/234 or 230/236 would rock.

Yes, that is a lot of lift.

As for staying away from Comp springs, I don't agree. Yes, their first batch had bad QC issues and a few people suffered major engine failures . However, the new blue striped batch has worked beautifully since they fixed their QC issues. Comp makes great springs. No reason to be afraid to use them. (At this point)

It looks like I may end up running the TSP 231/237 .598/.595 I'm going to give it a try with the 918's, Ti retainers, and Yella Terra Rockers. I'll have the car together Friday and then Dyno next Saturday Oct 4.. so I guess we will see about valve float then. If I have problems, I'll probably do the new crane duals.

what heads are u using? If they are from PP, the installed height of the comp 978's is 1.850"'s which wont colapse a lifter with the lbs it puts on it.

I do have the PP 5.3's with the 978's.. but I'm taking them off and installing the Patriot LS6 style when I stick the big cam in. I am going to run the 918's on the new heads.

gomer, I think you have the right idea! Go with the Comp 918's, they are much lighter and work very well. I just made three passes down a 3 mile track turning 6200 rpm in 5th gear the whole way. This is not like drag racing where you just hit high rpm for an instant in low gears and come back down, I held it there continuously for over a minute on each pass.

Just some more "food for thought"
a cylinder's valvetrain with a stainless valve, large dual spring (978), steel retainer, and locks weighs right around 205grams, now multiply that by 16 and you get 3280g or 7.234 pounds.. NOW, take away the large dual and it's retainer and replace it with a 918 and it's ti retainer.. you get 145g now x 16 for 2320g or 5.115 pounds of valvetrain. WOW, that's major improvement! Take it even one step further Ti VALVE, 918 spring, Ti retainer, Ti lock = 98g x16 = 1568g or 3.457 pounds. So you could possibly cut the weight of your valvetrain in HALF. That's gotta be worth something above 5k rpms.
