Default LS6 cam with stock A4 converter and stock tuning?

I don't know much about automatic cars, I admit, but recently I've been thinking it'd be neat to put a cam in one. Its a bone stock A4, with nothing but a lid. The bang for buck seems to be in the LS6 cam....will this idle fine with the stock idle rpm, stock converter, stock everything?

in other words, will she like it?

"Why is that service light on?"

"My car shakes. Why does it do that?"

"My car is still slower than that Volvo that the crazy guy with the fat kid owns. Why cant you fix that?"

Yes, it'd be going in the GF's car. She doesnt want it to shake much or really lope much, and the whole thing needs to cost only a few hundred bucks. The LS6 cam seems like the obvious choice, I've just never seen how a stock converter A4 handles a cam like this.

The idle and driveability is no different than the stock cam. There is also no difference in power (torque or hp) in the low end. Where the LS6 cam really shines is from 4,000 RPM and up. Hopefully Ireland31 will chime in with his experience, but I believe he made 355rwhp with this cam in a '02 SS A4 with only a lid.

Wow, 355rwhp, no issues, stock tuning, and stock converter? My GF just wants more hp up top for when she needs it....doesnt really care too much about the low end as thats mostly just driving around town.

Sounds like its time to mod the stock (except lid) car

Hey! It has a mega-pimp Hooker exhaust on it. Its not stock, yo!

355rwhp, SAE???

But I wonder how then stock 02 Z06's make 355 and thats with LS6 heads, fancy "manifolds", fancy cats, LS6 intake manifold, through a M21 instead of an A4, but possibly a really lame air intake.

I dont think her car has the LS6 intake though (also a very nice mod that doesnt hurt anything, but costs 400$). Either way, if it made 340+ I would be very impressed.

You would have to do a before->after dyno, of course....

Also, what is the installed height needed on the LS6 springs? The 2002 LS6 valves are a different length than LS1's I thought, so are different seats needed?

No LS6 intake on this car since it needs to keep EGR.

Just change the springs and the cam, everything else will be fine.

Here is a link to his original post, after installing the cam:

https://ls1tech.com/threads/showflat...art=1&vc=1

352.6rwph at 6200 and 343.7rwtq at 4800.

As for the springs, just install the '02 LS6 springs. No other changes are needed.

Idle is smooth as stock, but there is a slight difference when the car is warm. No tuning is neccesary, but will help. You should bump up the shift points to really take advantage of the cam.

Check out the Stealth Cam that MTI offers. There is a soundclip on their website. Might be a nice alternative. The LS6 cam does have the slightest little jiggle to it. Anyway, I wouldn't worry about it. She wouldn't even notice it.

Dead stock idle, no tuning needed, stock converter, never an SES light or even a stumble. You could never tell the difference between the stock cam and the '02 LS6 cam as far as any driveability issues go. And as stated above, I made great power with it. It is just a straight swap, no need to worry about pushrod length or spring height. I used Thunder Racing hardened 7.40" (stock Length as Im sure you know) from a previous car. Let me know if you have any other questions since my car is pretty much identical to what you are going to be putting it in. I just have a lid, and now a TR ported TB...It did 357RWHP at the last dyno before I swapped it for the OMC. You cant beat the price either.

I made 367rwhp with the LS6 cam,lts no cats, lid, maf, free mods in a 02 A4....since then I have switched to MTI's T1 cam and and gained another 20 hp along with 10 ft lbs of tq You will need new springs with this cam as well good luck !

Thanks guys, sounds like the cam indeed does work with stock tuning/converter, so thats all I needed to hear. Some great results from it!

Price is a very big consideration so an aftermarket cam is out of the question.

How does this cam fare against the "G.M hotcam"
on the dyno and idle characteristics?

the GM Hotcam is meant for m6s generally and has a very lopey idle with a pretty big gain on top. The LS6 cam is much more tame and drivable without computer/tuning mods.

I would change the should to must.

Your choking the whole point of this cam if you shift at the stock shift points fyi.
