Default Emmissions friendly cam for a 427?

Well, over here in Iraq I got some bad news. Where I live in N.C., they now have emissions testing. So, the question is, what cam can I pass with? This is bad news, my car is in storage, the inspection runs out before I return, and I have no cats

A 224 114 LSA is probably about the most you can sneak through an emissions test, unless you want to resort to some really creative tricks! That's why I didn't go any bigger than that.

unless you want to be cam swapping come emmissions time then i'd say the 224 is the biggest you can go. my TR230 is going in tommorow and with the **** emissions in cali im gonna have to swap it out

lol.. 427 and emissions in the same thread... LOL.. stock cam maybe???

just kidding man. it is kinda funny though. the two terms just arent synonymous. a GOOD tuner would be able to do this w/o a cam swap so it's either that or installing cats/ insane stock muffler, EGR ect ect.. or the good ol Alchohol trick.

shouldn't a 427 be able to handle a bigger cam tho? maybe an X1 on a 116LSA, or an R1 on a 115 maybe?

I was going to suggest a X1 on a 114 ls. Runs rather well too in my 388.

Isnt NC one of the OBD2 tests? They may not be sniffing your tailpipe...just hooking into your computer.

I just talked to a guy where I'm from and he says it is a OBD2 test. So I guess I don't need to worry about cats do I? Supposedly, as long as the cam doesn't set codes I should pass. If a big cam is well tuned would I be good? I do have a 226/226 cam that I could swap in for tests if need be. That should easily pass on a 427, but I don't want to do that if I don't have to. I don't really know about these tests.

With that many cubes, Id say its possible to pass a sniffer test with a cam in the 230 range. You just have to worry about your overlap, and take a lot more things into consideration. Like the fact that the engine will run more efficiently becasue of the more cubes.

well, you are on the right track. BUT, dont expect a perfect green light if you go in there stinking the place up and burning eyes with a huge lope and an exhaust sound that obviously says "no cats". Im sure they can ask you to back it up with a sniffer test if they arent feeling cool and look under the car.

Im putting cats on my 388 car. Its the responsible thing to do if I plan to drive it more than a couple thou a year. If I miss the 5hp through the exhaust that a really good set of cats will take, I'll buy a EWP or something.

There was an MTI R1 cam'd 422 package here in Colorado that passed emissions fine. The larger displacement can handle more cam. My MTI stage II TA passed emissions very nicely with the B1 cam and high flow cats(passed IM240 roller testing in Maricopa county and the idle/2500rpm test here in Colorado).
