Default Can I swap chain without dropping pan

Can I do a chain up grade(not double row chain) during a cam swap without dropping the oil pan? I'd like to skip that step if possible. Once the cam sprocket is off can I squeeze the OEM chain between the crank sprocket teeth and crank snout and rear face of the pan and then slip the upgraded chain in place? This would save a lot of extra work.

sure as hell can. i'd throw an LS2 chain in there though. cost about the same as a stock one but is a hell of alot beefier. have to take out the oil pump though so watch out for the pickup tube bolt on the bottom...it's a pain in the *** to get off and back on without dropping it into the oil pan, but if you're really careful you should be alright. go about midway down this page if you have any questions about it: http://ls1howto.com/index.php?article=2

The only sucky part is swapping the oil pump which can be a PITA if you have never done it, also follow those instructions.

Those insctructions show dropping the pan to get to the one bolt for the oil pump pickup. Are you saying you can get this bolt off and the oil pump off without dropping the pan at all?

You have to loosen the pan but don't have to take it completely off.

The chain comes off without loosening any of the oil pan bolts except the ones removed holding the front cover.

I didn't want to hear I would have to lower the pan just to swap in a stronger single row chain. In order to just "loosen the pan" you have to remove the two bolts that go into the timing cover and all the bolts around the perimeter of the pan as well as the two in the back that go through the bellhousing. At that point the pan has effectively been dropped just to get the pickup tube bolt out. This means jacking the vehicle and putting it up on stands. These are all the steps I'm trying to avoid. I was hoping I could get the old chain off without disturbing the oil pump or the pan.

Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should...

Dropping the pan will make life a lot easier for you, and only requires an extra 10 min of loosening bolts. It's not a "lot of extra work". The pickup tube bolt is a major PITA to get to and/or secure so you don't drop it, with the pan in place (assuming the engine is still in the car), the oil pump can also sometimes be more difficult to line up with the pan not lowered.

I'd do yourself a favor and lower the pan. It's no big deal and will make the job go smoother. There is an expression I like to use.......Work smarter, not harder.

Don't you have to take the pump off to get the chain out from the motor?

Correct, the oil pump must be removed to remove the timing chain from the motor.

All I can say is good luck getting the chain out and in without lowering the pan. It really isn't much work to drop the pan down a couple of inches. You will likely save yourself a lot of time and frustration by doing so.

Can you pull the pan all the way off with the engine in the car? I'm thinking of swapping for a Moroso pan.

I agree with Damian, lower the pan. It took about 5 extra min to lower mine and then the oil pump bolt was a cake job to get in and out.

i agree too. this comes from people who have done it lots of times. including me. so stop trying to make your own rules for working on these cars. do it the right way and stop cutting corners. it will bite you in the end.
