Default Cam and Crank Sprocket Replacement with timing chain?

Hey all,

I was reading in the Haynes Repair manual for the LS1 that you "must" replace cam gear and crank gear whenever you change the timing chain. Does anyone know the reason for this? Has anyone just changed their chain and not changed the cam and crank sprockets? If so, how many miles since the swap? Thanks for the feedback.

You don't have to change the sprockets unless they are worn and require replacement. Using the stock single row sprockets with after market timing chains is very common. Just inspect both gears in the tooth area and the back of the top sprocket for wear. If they look good, no issue with using them. If they are questionable, replace them.

No issue, the LS2, 3, etc has been the stock replacement/OE chain for a while now.

I think the reasoning behind that is the same with all chains and sprockets, not just for cars but for anything with a chain and sprocket and that would be wear patterns. On motorcycles if you dont change the procket when you do the chain your new chain will wear a lot faster than normal. I dont know if its the exact same for cars but, im changing chain and both sprockets when I do my cam install next week.
