Guys with 383's As of now my car is sitting in the garage suffering from numerous small problems. After i fix them im thinking of yanking the motor and building a 383 this summer. I have a few questions as this will be my first build. 1) Do you think a 110k mile ls1 block will be ok to reuse? 2) What rotating assembly do yall reccomend? 3) What heads/cam/intake combo are you guys using and what power are you making? This is more than likely gunna be a budget build but im just trying to get some ideas to point me in the right direction. The car wont be my daily driver but i would like to drive it on the streets from time to time....large lumpy cams dont bother me at all:devil:. Any info and tips would be appreciated. Thanks. |

Not set on a certain price yet. I dont want to cheap out on parts but i dont need the most expensive shit on the market either. Im just hoping a few people will chime in with their combos or suggestions and i can go from there. Ill more than likely go with ported ls6 heads and a fast 92/92 combo..eagle crank and what not. Just looking for suggestions on a good solid combo. |
Well I was originally gonna go 383, found a Callies rotating assembly from Scoggin Dickies that I was looking to order. But after factoring in all the extra cost of getting the block ready, balancing and install. I just decided to go a lil bigger and get a 408 from TSP. I got that with Diamond forged -10cc dished pistons and ARP rod bolts for 4200 bones, shipped. I already had a MS4, Fast 90/90, PRC 5.3L stage 2.5 heads and Fast 36lb/hr injectors that are going on. Thats my set up. Should be done next week. |

I was originally gunna do a 408 but figured i could do a 383 for less money. You guys are gunna make me regret my decision to go with a 383 lol. I would be happy with 450rwhp out of a 383 and i think thats easily doable. |
Yeah a buddy of mine has a 383, ls6 intake, stage 2.5 LS6 heads and a 231/235 .643/.610 cam. Im pretty sure he is close to 11.75:1 comp and made 460hp thru an auto. He ran a 11.1@123. Ill see if I can get him to post. |
i have a 383 in my car 110,000 will be fine on the motor. My setup is a Eagle rotating assembly, JE pistons, PRC 5.3 Liter Stage 2.5 Heads, with a m=MS$ cam. FAST 90/90 intake. car makes around 470 through a a4. i run a 3600 Yank converter. This is a FULL WEIGHT street car! runs 10.90's all day and mid to high 9's on spray. (200 shot) in my opinion, 383's are the way to go if u are on a budjet and want to save some weight. the lq9's weigh alot more and sometimes won't make the power that a 383 will. its all in the heads and camshafts. you have got to find that perfect combination. |

i have a 383 waiting to go in my car (i just finished building it) but its an eagle crank and rods with daimond pistons, patriot 59cc stage 2 LS6 heads, torquer v2, roller rocker, fast 92/92 intake, fast fuel rails and 36 lb injectors, nitrous daves 92mm plate kit will also be on it. it should about 11.5 to 11.75 compression. I also like the option of goin 383 its relatively cost efficeint and should make good power |
TFS 215's milled is your ticket....look at my set up. as for bottom end...any good forged kit will be fine...you dont need to go nuts like i did. |
The block will be good to reuse. When comparing the 383 to a 408 the main differences are weight and the purchase of the 6.0 block. Either way you would have to machine both blocks so the 383 is cheaper when you have the block already. For my 383 the rotating assemble is made up of a variety of parts. I had everything build by Futral. They use Callies cranks, Manley rods, and Diamond pistons. I am not a big fan of the cheaper assemblies because most I have seen have clearance issues and require more work to balance. As for the Heads and Cam. I am running LS6 243 heads with 2.055 and 1.60 valves. They have been ported by Larry Meaux and are just as good as any aftermarket ones out there. Pretty much any good head will cost you 2000 to 3000 dollars. The cam is a custom grind from Futral. As for the power I am making. Last I had the car dynoed with my 3.90 gears it was around 494 rwhp. I am probably over 500 now though with my 3.42s and the speed density tune, but will have to wait to see. |
I'm undecided on cam. just sold my MS4 cam, thinking of going with a Torquer V3 (looking for more power across the band, and am dropping from a Yank PT4000 to a SS3600 for driveability reasons). I've got PRC LS6 S1 heads and was at 11.1 compression on my 347 before spun bearing. Having TSP 383 me now... Unless you get weight off the car I think the cube difference between 383 and 408 is given up by the weight increase. |
Here is the budget build for my 383. Compstar crank and rods, diamond pistons, comp cam 238/240 (off the shelf cam), PRC 2.5 LS6 heads, LS6 intake, 85mm profession products TB, mac mid-length headers, crappy 2.5" Y, flowmaster catback, and compression is a modest 11.2-11.3. Thru a built A4, 3600 stall and 10 bolt made 440/430. I have not ran it at the track yet, but soon, so no times yet. Things I want to change or wish I would have done first time. Gone LT's, fast 92/92, TFS heads, higher compression (11.5-11.7ish), and custom cam. |
I had my motor rebuilt at 120k so you should be fine. My first thought was 383 but was persuaded to go bigger and settled on a 395 (4.100 stroke w/ 3.915 Bore). Eagle rotating assembly w/ Venolia pistons. Many said the bore was unsafe but I've got 3yrs/10k on the rebuild and she runs strong. (If it were today I'd prob go 402/408 considering the availability and cost) Heads are Livernois Stage III's and flowed more than advertised. Custom Cam Motion cam (low 230's/high lift/112LSA), FAST 90/NW90 Had multiple dyno runs, I think the best was 470hp/485tq... |

I think thats reasonable for the extra cubes because a high mileage block should be honed anyway. |
