If he wants to do heads on it the best bang for the buck is the L31 vortec heads, have him get this kit if he has a TPI 350: http://www.sdpc2000.com/cart.asp?act...2175&pid=89538
Or this kit if he has the TBI 350: http://www.sdpc2000.com/cart.asp?act...2174&pid=89536
If its a 305 engine, there is no hope!
Also if he needs more info on anything thirdgen.org has tons of useful stuff for those cars.

ls1 motor is completely different than the lt1, its really a y-block
if you got a 305, get a 350, if you wanna be stubborn, put on a set of high flowing heads with matching cam and see that thing eat 5.0's, then again you do the same for a 350 see it eat porche's
go with vortec heads, not the immitation edlebrock

The ls1 is 4 head bolts per cylinder and the 305-350 are 5 bolts per cylinder so none of the head bolts will line up.The lifter valley cover is part of the manifold on the 305-350. unlike the ls1 which has a seperate cover. I also say go with the vortec heads they are better then alot of the aftermarket heads. A buddy of mine has a solid roller 350 with stock vortec heads and a cam making 425hp

Sea,
www.thirdgen.org as Joseph mentioned is an excellent site.
The stock TPI system is very lame and really can't move air very well. I know someone poured about $6000 into a TPI set up and it was still a dog. The TBI system is even lamer. He'll want to go mini-ram, carb or a modifed LT1 intake w/distruber IMO.
As for heads the vortec are a good starting place. I think SPDC also offers CNC ported L98's for a very reasonable price too. If he wants to build something that can stomp nuts ProAction (may have a new name these days) Lighting iron heads will be almost impossible to beat. However, they may be too much for the street.
Good luck
BTW - those LS1 heads will almost bolt up to a 5.0
