LS1 block v.s. LS2 block
I was wondering if anyone has heard if the new LS2/LS7
engines utilize a different block from GM, or is GM
just using the current blocks for the new GEN IV engines.

I'm having trouble keeping up with what the new engines are supposed to displace.
For the C6, I hear there would be a bigger displacement LSX but I'm not sure if that is a stroked 3.900 bore block or what.
The trucks are supposed to get a 6.0 aluminum block that is like a 4-6-8, Power on Demand or something like that. But the cam sensor for that motor is in the front of the assembly so that means the cams would not be the same, but one knowledgeble source felt that this block could be modified to work with our LS1/LS6 stuff.

blocks
I figured that GM would keep the blocks the same. It would be silly to make an all new block. They could just make the present one larger. I had heard of some enhanced features, but these would be compatable with present blocks.

I doubt there will much difference between the LS6 block and LS2 block...maybe the LS2 has abit more wall thickness for bore but other than that I don't see them spending hundreds if not millions to redesign a damn good block.

I more or less agree with Josey that a lot of the design for the new block will borrow from the current LS1/LS6 blocks.
I doubt GM redesigns the block...I think GM Powertrain pretty much planned this out when the basic archetecture was done a while back.
The LS6 is an evolutionary improvement over the LS1. I think the new big bore/twin cam will also be evolutionary with some major improvements.
With all the computer added design done these days, I doubt it really costs GM all that much to make/majorly modify a design.

this isint much to do with the Ls2/7 or whatever they are going to call these new motors, but i did see that the SSR motors are all aluminum 5.3's as opposed to the previous all iron versions.

I've heard the same rumors about the cam sensor, and I think maybe even the knock sensors being moved (?) in the new blocks, meaning its not going to be a direct bolt in replacement. As long as the sensors aren't different, the motor mounts are in the same place, and nothing has moved majorly it'll retrofit into our cars fine. I wonder if LS1 heads will fit on LS2 blocks, and vice versa? I wonder if an LS2 intake manifold will fit on LS1/6 heads?

jmX,
I have HEARD that the POD truck stuff has relo'd cam sensor to front, and the knock sensor setup is totally different since the motor will be too noisy for stock knock sensors.
Regarding the Vette stuff, I had heard that one of the Vette engines was going to get more stroke. I know that GM at least once had owned some 3.77'ish cranks that they played with.

I think I read somewhere that the C6 would have a bigger bore aluminum engine.

I also heard the same about the cam & knock sensors.

GM SUCKS. as soon as I unload the 99ss I'm getting a nice reliable SHIFTABLE WRX sti or EVO. who cares what new permutations of the LSx they're doing. the dealer network blows, the fit/finish on the f bods sucked and the M6 SUCKS the royal.
thank you for your time.

FYI, There is a guy on my local board that lost his tranny in his brand new Evo with less than 1000 miles on it, so nothing is perfect.
I too wouldn't think the new LS2/LS7 blocks would differ much from the LS6.

It's a little late to make the cylinder bore centerlines wide enough to allow bigger overbores, so how 'bout a tall deck block??? Hey, we can dream...

Well I have read all the same that you guys have. The LS2 will be a 6L and the LS7 will be a 6.3L.
Here are my assumptions/insights:
LS2: Same blcok that the Escallade uses cast in aluminium along with LS6 heads and a LS-6 crank to keep it reliable in the upper RPMS. (these are guesses).
LS7: Here are where the big changes are. I have read that they are going with the dual cam in block setup with 3 valves per cylinder. This would most definately need a new block & heads. I have also heard that the engine will be high-reving, which suggests to me that they will go the all bore route and keep a similar stroke to the current LS6. All of this is strange to me though because this will most certainly make the LS7 priced significantly higher than the LS2, and pretty much throws parts-sharing between the platforms out the window. Maybe the LS2 will have the dual cam in block as well??? Who knows
