Default Spark gap

on a H/C car, does it really matter if the plugs are gapped at .040 vs to being gapped at .050. Does it really make any difference at all???

I would assume .050 would be the optimal gap for a H/C setup, but why would others make the gap even tighter to .040.

Alot of this depends on the details of the combo. What compression are you running? Which heads (GM, aftermarket, etc)? What camshaft and how high are you going to spin the motor? You want as wide of a gap as possible, without having blow-out issues, and all of those variables will play into that.

general rule of thumb is .051 for n/a regular compression and .041 for higher compression to .035 for boost and n2o

10.5:1 compresison, LS6 heads and spinning to 6700rpms.

I would start at .050"....you might get away with .055" depending on the plug, wires, and tune.
