Aluminum 5.3l block and sleeving
Can a later model 2005+ 5.3l be dry sleeved or does it require a wet sleeve system? I read that the 5.3l took on the benefits of the GEN4 architecture and since they are plentiful........ Dry sleeving is about a grand cheaper, kind of negates the point of the cheaper block if you have to go wet sleeve.

5.3 liter
The 5.3 can not be dry sleeved. I do not recommend wet sleeving the 5.3 or LS6 blocks.
If you want a dry sleeved large bore block, get yourself an LS2 block for your build. A good used block is fine.

Ls6 mid
The LS6 is pretty weak in the bottom area between the sleeves. The large bulkhead windows are the problem. The LS1 block has no bulkhead windows making it much stronger for the MID sleeves. The LS6 block can crack between the MID sleeves which is why I avoid doing the MID installation in them.
The LS2, LS3 LS7 blocks also have windows in the main bulkheads, but the coolant jacket depth is revised in these blocks. The revision leaves a greater material depth at the bottom between the liners making these blocks much better candidates for MID than the LS6 block.
I get to see a lot of stuff other shops are never going to see. I do a lot more blocks, not just GM. I also do Darton's block R&D for sleeves, and am one of the patent holders of the Darton MID sleeves.

I hate to bump this old thread but I was told otherwise on the new gen 4 5.3 blocks that changed to the external knock sensors and front timing cover mounted cam sensor. ERL said that the new 5.3 blocks use the exact same water jacket as an LS2. So that leaves me thinking once you bore out the cylinder liners for the sleeve it should be identical to an LS2. I have a gen4 5.3 that externally looks identical to an LS2 and the water jacket looks noticeably different than my 2000 LS1 block.
Can anyone clarify that?
