383 Cam swap
 
Current graph inside. Needing input on whether or not swapping a bigger cam into my 383 would yield worthwhile results.

Motor specs:
Ls6 block
4" crank
Flat top pistons w/ reliefs
Patriot Stg 2 243 heads. (not milled)
232/234 596/598 112lsa cam
Ported Fast 90, 92 TB. 85mm maf
Pacesetter 1 3/4" LT's
Custom offroad Y w/ 4" flowmaster merge, dumped

Motor made 466rwhp/463rwtq corrected.
(disregard the afr. as seen in graph, car made consistent power whether the afr was 11.5 or 13.5 which is weird)

I have also ran 11.35 and 122mph in 1/4 with a 1.75 60ft. 7.3 at 97mph in 1/8th. (I really feel like another 1-2mph are in the car as it sits.) This was all with a 3480lbs raceweight. Car is a m6 with 4.10 gears.

All this being said, and after checking out my dyno graph, I'm wondering if a cam swap would yield a little better performance and power. I'm in no way dissapointed with my power output, I just really feel like I'm losing a substantial amount of potential power with this small of a cam in a stroker.

Car is not a DD, and drivability is not my primary concern. I do not, however, want to lose track mph. Getting a big hp number on a dyno means nothing if it has no low/mid pulling power and won't get better track results.

I also realize that a head/cam swap would make the biggest difference, but budget wise I'm only considering a cam swap at this point.

Anything you notice about my dyno graph that is worth mentioning is welcome.

Two other things:

1) I don't mind going the custom spec'd cam route if some thought it would gain decent results.

2) I had a g5x4 in my last 383 and it made 498/457. Similar torque, just more hp on top. You could really feel the extra power up top in that car too. It was a little laggy at low rpms (new motor is not), but it was also geared 3.42. 4.10s oughta help my current car if a similar cam were swapped in. Other components were quite similar to this motor. The x4 sounded alot better at idle too.

Get Pat G to spec you a custom cam for your setup. He'll nail your requirements for a very reasonable fee.

what are you suspension mods?your 60 fts are slow for your ET.that much power needs a good tuned suspension to utilize all that power.

Agreed on 60...I have a buddy running full weight turning 10.9s/124mph on 383 MS4 car but he is cutting 1.4 60's on a SS3600 stall. He is 47x rwhp and I can't remember tq..

EDIT: Get your 60 down and you will be in the 10's

A 383 will want 6-8 degrees more overlap than an LS1. Basically, your 236-239 cam is like a 229/232 cam in an LS1...good size, but not huge. I would say your current cam is perfect for a daily driven street strip car, but for a weekend-only toy, you could go bigger. The PP heads will need more overlap than really good heads like Trick Flows because they lack the really strong mid-lift flow numbers. You could afford to go into the lower 240s on intake and mid to upper 240s on exhaust duration. Lift would depend on where your heads flow best and your spring life expectations. Most likely, you'd wind up with an LSA between 111-112.

I have a similar build with the ms4 cam. I haven't got dyno numbers or 1/4 times, but its just a monster on the street.:devil:

So, in your opinion, would what I would gain by having you spec me a cam be a worthwhile investment of time and money? What would you guess could be my best and worst case scenario gains from this swap?

I just ordered a plate kit from Nitrous Outlet and could focus my cam money towards suspension and drivetrain mods if power gains would only be something like 10rwhp with no appreciable torque gains.

(And for the anyone wondering, the video posted by Sneaky is of a Terminator I'm lined up to race. He currently makes 533rwhp/501rwtq and has a similar raceweight.)

i think you need to just worry about the suspension. Take those 1.7's down to 1.5's or so and you will be right around the 10's. I was wonderin why that video was posted haha. I'd hold off on the cam until after suspension if money is a problem.

Thanks for the replies guys. I will start to focus more on my suspension/drivetrain mods.... I have a Ford 9" chunk and axles ready to go in, just no housing yet.

I would still like to hear from anyone what they think a properly spec'd cam would add to my power output or speed.....
