Hey guys, Im gonna be putting on either an MS3 or MS4 cam in my 2000 SS... I was wondering if anybody knew what the most lift you can run with the stock pistons before either changing them or shaving the valves reliefs.....

MS3 - 237/242 .603"/609" 112 LSA
or
MS4 - 239/242 .649"/609" 111 LSA

You can have 1" of lift with the right valve events. Lift does not dictate piston to valve clearance, duration and LSA do.

That is correct, by the time the valve is at max lift the piston is already quite a ways down the cylinder.

Max lift occurs when the piston is near bottom dead center so it has little to do with PTV. Duration, LSA and advance in order have the biggest effect on PTV...

i got the ms4 and will hopefully be puttin it in this weekend. i dont know for sure, but called tsp before ordering and they said it'll fit

Since you have an LS1 346 the biggest cam with out having to fly cut is the MS4. Anyting bigger and you will have to fly cut.

Yet you still have to check your PTV, secondly a piece of advice if your running 243s do a stage 1 either from TEA ro AI and you will be fine. Another piece of afdvice I can give you is run the LS6 valves and a very stout spring. Beehives, Comp 921s, or better with stock rockers with a trunion upgrade, gives you a very light yet solid valve train.

You plan on shifting at 6800-7000? If not then don't get a big cam. There is some more advice.

hope you have gears cuz that big of a cam is gonna be a dog down low with stock compression...

I know a guy who bought my son's 99 camaro. Put the ms4 without degreeing the cam, boom, broke.

ms3 and ms4 were designed for the ls1...bone stock...with stock gaskets...to clear.

if you are not stock...measure!!!

^^^read earlier post, lift combined with duration and lsa will tell you, but I'm sure lunati could give you an answer for the particular cam you're looking at...

I agree 100%, big cam driven within the LEGAL limits on the streets is not so fun. Parts need to match application. Parts need to match application just thought i would say it twice. Also i must disclose that i did not actually read the thread due to the title of the post, kinda a non starter for me.
