Going h/c have q's As soon as i get my tax money i plan on treating myself with a heads and cam setup for my 2000 Trans am. So far i have: -ls6 intake -slp lid -jet hot headers -custom 3" true duals with Magnaflow mufflers -Performabuilt stage 2 4l60e -PI 4000 stall -3.73 gears So far ive been looking at getting this setup: -Yella Terra non adjustble 1.7:1 -ls7 Lifters -PRC Stage 2.5 5.3L Heads -PRC Dual Springs -Texas Speed Tsunami Cam 111 lsa -Texas Speed Push rods 7.400" -Rollmaster Single-roller Timing Chain -Texas Speed ported ls6 oil pump -255 Fuel Pump -RaceTronix 42IB Injectors Would this setup work well with everything else i have? Is there anything im missing? How much power should i expect? |
Don't assume you need 7.4 pushrods, any head/cam swap should be double checked bro. Not trying to sound snappy but I installed an MS3 with PRC 2.5 5.3s and slightly touched a few valves with 7.4s. You could save a couple bucks and get an LS2 chain also. Swapping to a fresh set of rockers is always good, but look to getting an underdrive pulley too. Powerwise, you'll easily crack 420rwhp I would think with what you have. Go for it fella, once all that snow disappears :D |
That cam has a lot of intake lift. With 5.3 head and high CR, you might have clearance problems. |
i read about the push rods, Im planning on getting the h/c package from TSP. I guess one i get everything i need to check clearances? If they arent right ill have to order different ones. The ls2 chain will do the job, hrm ill look into it. I hope i make good power. I was about dead even with my buddies lt1 when he put 400 down. Now hes go about 415 and hes pulling me, I cant be having that. |
why not get a fast 92/92 while your there? |
cause money doesnt grow on trees. ive been saving for a year, dont make alot of money right now. i just picked up the ls6 the other month. |

You may talk to someone at Texas Speed about what kind of clearance that setup will have. Many of these kind of cams come in closer than what is generally accepted as safe, so you might plan to cut the pistons for a little extra clearance. Flycutting Tools - this thread is up near the top of the Internal Engine forum again. Good Luck |
Since you are concerned about budget, I don't think that upgrading to the 255 fuel pump is a necessity at the power levels you are looking at - maybe someone else can confirm this - but hopefully you can save a few bucks by not having to upgrade the fuel pump at this time. |
i dunno man i did the same thing but shitty home ported 241's an got 430 on a mustang dyno an the car feels great. id bet ud get me by at least 10rwhp with a fast id say for you closer to 450-460 if the stall dont soak up too much and a 90/90 wouldnt hurt either. id say screw the rr's and yes at least 42'ers cus i 430 put my injectors at 106% duty cycle. he prolly could have taken it up a tiny bit too |
measure for push rod last.you will need a BBK 85 mm TB.you might need 36 lbs injectors.you should make 420 wrhp. |

Not sure if I read your post correctly, but the pushrod length is determined by the base circle diameter of the cam, the height of the rocker arm when installed properly (correct swipe) and the desired lifter preload. Installing shorter pushrods would not have gained you any piston to valve clearance. You either need to cut the pistons for clearance, have the valves sunk to increase clearance, or select a shorter duration cam..... |
What are the goals for your car? Why do you want 5.3/tsunami? Basically I'm asking did you just check their website once or twice and pick a package or do a lot of research into that setup? Its already been mentioned about possible ptv clearance issues. Also, save $ and stay with stock rockers. If you're set on that cam use the $ you saved get some stg 2.5 ls6 heads over the 5.3. Oh, and since you're concerned about a budget a cam with a high lift may not be your best option. Consider valvetrain wear and the frequency of swapping springs opposed to a lower lift setup. |
I would get a better set of heads. I am kinda disappointed in my 5.3's....... |
Maintence isnt a huge issue for me, I have the tools and the know how too keep up with it. Im just going based on what im getting back in taxes and what ive saved up over the last year. My motor has almost 100k on it im not skimping on rockers. I want to replace the fuel pump for the simple fact i dont want a stock pump to bite me in the ass during tuning like it did my buddy. Im not going fast, i just bought the ls6 and my throttle body is ported. I want good power, I dont care how streetble it is. I just want it done for cruise week and i want to be able to go have good fun at the track this season. I picked the tsunami based on the fact its been making good power, What cam would yall reccomend? And what gains would i see with the ls6 over the 5.3 heads? |
sorry man but there are soooo many cams out there now. |
I was looking at going with a texas speed cam, since im trying to pick up one of the h/c kits, They are nicely priced. hrm decisions decisions |
I think next time around, unless a better grind catches my eye, I'm gonna go with The Polluter cam, or get something custom spec'd. I would also ditch the RR's and put that money towards better heads. I bought the Stage 1 LS6 heads which will do me fine, but you could get the 2.5 and be really happy  |
Call up tsp and talk to them. They will be more help with a setup |
You will have to call TSP for having the valves sunk so the Tsunami will fit. The lift on that cam is re-dunk-ulous. |
No phucking body listened. Have fun and piss your money away...Then post up on here how GREAT your combo is LOL. My combo should EASILY be in the 11's and it is not. When the heads come off I will get them flowed and figure out why.......Damn stock headed guys are spanking me..... And yes my bottom end is tight... |
