Default What would I gain by swapping my GM Hotcam for a TR230?

My car has the following:
SLP flow-pack, ported t. body, LS6 intake, GM Hotcam (218/227 - .525/.525 on a 112), Pacesetters, 3" TSP Y-pipe without cats, SLP Dual/Dual (getting ready to add 2-1/2" duals without cats).

Car puts down 364rwhp / 364rwtq SAE on a Dynojet with the converter locked.

After tuning, what kind of gains would I expect to see?

Thanks in advance Guys....

I'd guess around a 20-30hp gain but you will want a 3,500 or larger stall

with a good tuner you should get 40 hp. I had a tr224 with boltons and made 401 rwhp. I now have tr230 with heads and picked up 12 hp by swiching cams with forged internals

Ouch, that kinda seems like a lot of work and $$ for 12 more HP, but the TR224 was treating you right. I was thinking 20-30 also.

I messed up a piston so thunder rebuilt the motor and swiched out the cam while the motor was out. I picked up alot of power threw the mid range also, so 12 on top seems low but 30 at 4500 rpms is the key. Only down fall is i lost some power on the low end with the tr230.

i prefer TSP cams over thunder cams. just my personal pref. before you commit to a cam i'de look at many different companies. but the hot cam is pretty much garbage you are going to gain with pretty much any cam.

I do not see longtubes in your mod list. If that's the case, you probably won't gain any power with the TR230.

The TR230 is a great cam, but it's a reverse split that was originally designed to help crutch the shitty LS1 intake, combined with an excellent exhaust setup. Basically, it's designed to work best with the most free flowing exhaust possible. If you're going to keep your current exhaust setup for a while, I'd swap to a larger traditional split favoring the exhaust side, with some more lift. There's a lot to be had in both power and driveability over the Hotcam. That cam is outdated technology.

Thanks for the responses Guys.

Damian,

I have Pacesetter lt's and will have 2-1/2" duals on the car before the cam goes in. Knowing that, what would your answer be?

Thanks...

My cam is a basic copy of the TR230 just ground in advance and on comps lobes which might not make as good power as the TR lobes

During my attempt at a dyno tune it made 360rwhp/345rwtq@6000rpm unlocked and through the exhaust (2 1/4" duals no x or h), a 12 bolt, and drag radials before the driveshaft halved itself and took out my brand new built transmission, the exhaust, and knocked a hole in the floor

It was the first wot pull so it needed some dialing in, not to mention I've been picking up between .15-.20 in the 1/8th mile just opening the cutouts

I'm hoping for at least 400rwhp locked when all is said and done (locked and exhaust open). I'm going to 3" duals this time too.

I loved the TR230. It made 390rwhp in my M6 full bolt on car. It ran 11.90 in full street tune. And ran 10.82 on a 150 shot. I give it a thums up.

I'm with the rest of the crowd. 20-30 HP gain. To me that would be worth it. You have a good exhaust and the LS6 Intake. If you are going to go to the trouble of a cam swap you might want to spec out a custom cam.

You might be able to squeeze out a few more usable HP/TQ by adding a little more intake/exhaust split and playing around with the LSA and advance. Otherwise you might gain the 20 HP, but have it all in the last 300-400 Rpms.

I might check with a few of the cam experts on this forum or sponsor who might be able to help you dial it in.

Good luck..

I just went from the Hot Cam to the TSP 228R and all I can say is WOW! Car pulls so much harder all over the rpm range plus the drive-ability is a lot better. Car idles at 800 rpms rock steady. I was hoping to get to the track this weekend to see how big a difference it made but doesn't look like that will happen with the rain moving in.

definitely ditch your hotcam for the TR230. I run the X1 which is the same as the TR230 just a tad more aggressive and i made 395rwhp with stock heads on my auto.

You can still get a good amount of money for that Hotcam if you decide to sell it.

Thanks Guys. Now trying to decide that if I do make a move, do this or just throw some ported LS6 or 5.3's on it and keep the baby cam until I take it off the daily commute?
