5.3 heads for $50...should i buy them/would they benefit me?
ok well to get straight to the point...my friend bout two 5.3 motors and he's parting out one so he told me he would sell me the set of heads for $50. my question is, is it worth it to buy these at this price and clean them back up and prep them for my H/C swap later on this year?

supposedly springs, valves, seats, retainers, seals. 10.75:1 compression, assemblemed to your specs. port and polished. like 1300. you gotta do the math on what the machine work, assembly, and parts are gonna cost but i figure for 50 buck they should be a good start. i wanna know for sure though too.

just bought a set of 5.3s and sending them off to p&p and small valve job with a z06 cam and springs from an 04 so when i get all that done i will let u know how it turns out cuz i never got an anwser from anyone on here when i asked but 50 is cheap u could proably sell them for 100 or 150 on here so u would at least make ur money back if nothing else

your biggest problem with those heads is the valve size. I just installed my modified 706casting 5.3's and there is quite a bit of work involved in getting them to flow as good as 241's.
The intake valves are much smaller in the 5.3 heads, so you will need to have a machinest grind in new larger valve seats. I only paid $80 for the valve grinding with a 5 angle valve job, if your in michigan i can give you the #. you then can purchase new bigger valves(2.00-2.02 will fit the stock seat) or too save money you can use the original 2.00" valves from your LS1.
after that i had my heads decked and closed up the combustion chamber to about 59cc which will give you around 11:1 comp. ($40.00 to deck heads).
keep in mind that you will need to check for PTV if you have a large camshaft with these heads.
At this point you will have a head that flows comparably to a 241 and will bump your compression up nicely. i went the extra step and port and polished mine. in the end they flow 289cfm @.600, much better than the original 220's from 853's that were on the car.

They are good for increasing compression, but need to be modified to flow better than 241's. And the PTV clearance is an issue with those heads with a larger cam like Synister C5 said. I would look at labor and parts cost vs. a set of TSP Stage II heads or the Patriot heads. You can catch specials on both, and are both decent heads for a budget build.

ok ok...thanks for all the info guys and if anyone has anymore to input feel free to do so. looks like i'll probably pick this set up this weekend though so i can start cleaning them up and...well if anything i'll turn around and sell them if i end up going a different route.
however, how far down should i mill the heads for a good compression ratio?
my plans for the car is Street/DD, full bolt ons w H/C/I. As for the cam i'll probably look into a 22x/22x or ls1 hot cam until i get the money to buy a built motor.
