Default Do I NEED a new oil pump with a cam install?

I'm having a cam installed in a few weeks, and I was wondering if i really needed a melling oil pump. The reason I ask is because I will be replacing the timing chain with a double roller, and I've read that using a double roller with a melling oil pump causes clearance issues.

Is that true?

You don't have to have a Melling oil pump, we typically use a ported LS6 oil pump because we prefer to keep as much clearance as possible. Either one of the pumps will get the job done.

You might be able to get away with it depending on how many miles are on the pump. it seems that some stock pumps have problems keeping up with the cams and some don't. More often then not we recommend replacing the pump just to be safe.

Melling has a new casting that is supposed to clear a DR.... Make sure you get the new one.... but a LS6 will work just fine. I personally run a old M10296 with a LS2 chain.....

There's a craigslist listing out here for a ported and shimmed LS6 oil pump with 9k miles on it for $50. Is that a good deal? The listing says it's shimmed for max pressure.

An oil pump is not a part I would buy used unless it was from a friend. But that's just me.

I picked up a TSP ported oil pump, and installed it with my MS3. Figured since everything was already taken apart I might as well.

I dont see why not. If I had less than 50k on it I wouldnt replace it but anything more than that I would while youre in there doing a cam swap. I got the ported LS6 from TSP when I did my cam last year. Its not cheap but oil pumps are known to fail on these motors, why chance it?

i would get the oil pump. mine only had 39k on it when i just did my cam swap. but im the kind of person that if i am in there doing the work why not just replace it with something new and much better. id hate to have to do the work twice.

That's my current mentality about it. I Figure why not spend an extra $150 or so and just have it done, instead of paying a TON more down the line when something breaks, and I KNOW it will...

Well, I guess I know what I'm doing.
