what is the weak link in the ls1 motor?

The weak link is what part...

ebeard 12-06-2010 10:13 AM

You are the weakest link, Goodbye. lol

But seriously, In terms of air flow? Strength? I'm gonna say rod bolts and stock ls1 intake

O2Form 12-06-2010 10:19 AM

Most around here think its the HEAD BOLTS that stretch and are constantly failing.

spotme03please 12-06-2010 10:26 AM

Ok thanks. I heard that but just wanted to make sure. I going to price out some rods and bolts.

Randy WS6 12-06-2010 12:49 PM

The rods & rod bolts are to weak for any extra HP, And the piston ring landing also are pron to brake .And then the rocker arms are bad for falling apart then the push rods are bad for bending. Besides that all is good.

Well just looking at rods just trying to figure what ones I want to go with

I under stand that, If you use the stock pistons, you will have a very small section of rods, Because most after market rods have bushings for free floating wrist pins and the stock pistons & rods are press fit pins.

Randy WS6 12-06-2010 01:36 PM

Also finding a after market rod in stock length is going to be hard also.

spotme03please 12-06-2010 01:37 PM

Ok thanks randy

spotme03please 12-06-2010 01:40 PM

K randy well I did think about making it a 434.

Out of a LS1 block !!!! You better have deep pockets ,LOL... The block will need sleaved. It will be cheaper to go with a after market tall deck block for the long stroke. . Im building a 430 out of a LS3 block with a 4.090" bore & 4.100 stroke

spotme03please 12-06-2010 01:55 PM

I Just want to run 10's . So if I put the ms4 in might be Able to go 10's

More details on car needed :thumb:

NA? or are you willing to spray it?

Rod bolts are only prior to 2002. Rods are weak but it depends on your set up I have seen many of cars with 100K miles on stock bottom ends running 600+ rwhp. I have 112K on my LS1 and its a H/C/I/E with a 150 shot

Randy WS6 12-06-2010 02:30 PM

My car is a 2000 WS6 and broke a stock rod on a 150 dry shot and with ARP-2000 rod bolts. The rod shattered in the beam.

true to this. Upgrading simple valve train components like your push rods, rockers and valve springs will make it last and hold up to more power. The Rod bolts in 01 and 02 I believe were okay but still not the best.

Hate to break it to you, but hitting 10s with only a cam I feel is harder than you think. You are going to have to take a bunch of weight out, get some cool suspension with slicks, and drive the piss outta you car.

spotme03please 12-06-2010 03:34 PM

No I have other stuff done to the car. Have slp lid, have fins cut out of air box, polished maf, coolant lines reran off of tb,ls6 intake,ls6 heads, s15 speed Inc. Cam right now want to put in ms4.AC removed. 12 way Qa1 suspension, aftermarket torque are, rear control arm with relocation brackets, weld 10 holes. With skinnys in front and cheater slicks in rear.
