Should I rebearing a motor while I'm changing rod bolts? I have an 02 motor with 80K miles on it with a 232/234 cam and ls6 heads. I plan on upgrading the rod bolts but while I'm in there should I replace the main bearings? Also what rod bolts should I go with? Btw, oil pressure is great on the motor, so the bearings are still good. |
02 already has the upgraded rod bolts. I wouldn't suggest just throwing new bearings in there. Are you talking about pulling the motor and having it freshened or what? |
I have 99 z28. I was thinking about changing out the bolts too. I was thinking should I go ahead and change the rods and pistons too |
If you're ging to pull the bearing why not at least get the crank polished and checked at an engine shop. If not I say leave them in there and just get the oil sampled every oil change and see what the wear is on the engine. I honestly wouldn't even bother at 80K but thats just me and it's not my engine. |

I plan on dropping the k-member because my oil pan gasket is leaking and needs to be replaced. Since I'm already down there I figured I would upgrade the rod bolts anyway for a little extra insurance. You already have the good bolts so I would leave it alone unless you plan to regularly see 7k+.... |
The correct way to do it would be to have the rods re-sized. Most get away without doing that, but you are taking a chance. I would just leave them alone. |
It's not broke, don't fix it. Just my opinion tho. |
if you had a pre 01 car then its well worth changing those bolts but you can throw in some ARP bolts if you really want to, |
there is a much better chance of you messing something up by doing that then the benefits you would get with your setup as of right now. |
i just did my rod bolts. i used katech as they are designed for no resizing the rods. but mine is a 98 with 148k. i also did it in the car with the kmemeber dropped. i feel better now. i see 6.5k shifts everyonce in a while but the car is not my dd |
