Default Timing chain and oil pump a must for cam swap?

I plan on getting a S15 cam and 243's this winter. Is a oil pump and timing chain a must? I hear yes and no. What do you guys think?

YES! First of all the LS1 chain is weak...and for $50 you should have an ls2 chain anyway.

Yes unless you like to do work twice if the chain breaks or your pump goes bad.

Do those things happen all the time? No but would you like to be one of the people it does happen too?

It depends on how many miles are on the engine and what your future goals are for the engine. A 30K garage queen that you are breaking open to simply do a cam swap, I might not do them. Reasoning IMHO, is do a quick search for "no oil pressure" you will find much, much, much, much more case of morons messing up their oil pump install than you will find of stock oil pumps failing. Same thing for the timing chain, I could not find one istance of a stock timing chain failing of a simple cam only car. If your car is up there in mileage I would do them though.

$50 ls2 timing chain, $150 ported + shimmed oil ls6 pump.
Good investment for piece of mind while its apart. Relief valve can stick open on a older stock oil pump when they are being reved hard. Ls2 chain is a straight swap and a lot stronger.

Yes to the pump/chain. That is a no-brainer for a 99 engine.

No to the "upgraded" rockers. They are not necessary. If it makes you feel better, do the trunion upgrade. Otherwise you're just wasting your money.

Good luck

Just go with a stock LS6 oil pump. I use 10-30 Mobil 1 and get 60psi pressure while cruising (hot). Actually went up about 10psi over my stock
55k mile 99 pump.

I just replaced my Futral ported LS1 oil pump for the LS6 one for the new motor.. Works great and it was easy to prime the engine.

They work good and are lighter but in my oppinion If your going with after market heads I would go with after market roller rockers to.

I only kept my Chain and PUMP in the car for a few reasons.

1- Cam only and it was small 228/230, and does not see migh RPM 6,200 ish at best
2- 2002 with 35k on the clock
3- Next time I open the motor up it will get at least a ported LS6 pump and either a C5R chain or LS2.
4- Not putting heads on it

I have a similar question, I will be doing a cam swap on my car as well in the next 2 months, so now I'm looking for parts. Is it worth me getting the ls6 ported pump? I am going to buy the ls2 timing chain regardless but I'm wondering if its worth it to buy one of those double roller ones or the adjustable ones that texas speed has for sale. I wouldn't mind saving money but couple 100 dollars isn't worth it for destroying my engine. Keep in mind my car is a c5Z with 20k miles on the clock, with a decent sized cam and future plans for heads and spray (non-daily driver) . Give me some advice.

Do both. Why would you do a cam/head swap and cheap out?
